Midi settings questions?
If anyone can straighten this out for me... I'm flummoxed by midi in general, but I'm trying to learn to use the Akai MPK261 with Sonar, with Audiobox USB... I'm creating Soft Synth tracks, but they are only working intermittently, sometimes I get output, sometimes I don't even when I haven't changed anything at all... often, right in the middle of playing a part the sound goes away, though the part I'm playing still records and I hear it on playback. I've not been able to pin down what brings it back. When I create a track the I/O defaults to Output=Master, Input=Omni, then I can see the Channel, the Bank and the Patch I've chosen. I've played around with the I/O settings but this seems to be the only setting I get output at all with, and, again, it's intermittent (for instance right now, I get squat). I've been watching as many YT videos about Midi, but they tend to start at a higher level than where I'm at... any help would keep me from jumping out my window.

Right now I'm just working with Cakewalk TTS-1, and I'm just playing it like a keyboard, can't even think about the pads at this point, I just need get sounds consistently (though I just banged on the pads and I get nothing there either, but sometimes I do).

The pads are likely set to midi channel 10. I'm assuming you're just using the tts piano patch?

Gosh, I hope the specific patch doesn't matter that much... I've been trying Piano, Reed and Brass patches, percussion... again, the pads are for the future, I need to get working and sound is sort of useful and I'm not getting any, at least not consistently or reliably, so far this morning, nada.

The advice usually given to anyone with this issue is to set the midi playback buffers to 500 or 750 in edit-preferences-midi-playback and recording, I think default is 250

Yeah, mine's at 750, I'll try 500... to be clear then, the MIDI Output on Master, Input on Omni is correct?

Three things that pop to mind - 1 you might have a keyboard split defined in the preset you're using 2 are you running a midi cable into the audiobox? if yes, unplug it. 3 have you plugged the mpk into multiple usb slots? shut down your computer, turn off the mpk, start your computer and log in to windows then turn on the mpk and once it's fully powered up launch platinum

Lol, okay, did all that, now not only do I have no live sound, I have no playback sound of my already recorded tracks. I did have another Midi connected to me AudioBox, running to another keyboard (shouldn't I be able to do that?) so I unplugged that... can't have anything split on the keyboard because I can't get sound long enough to learn how to use it... and the MPK is only plugged in with its USB Midi.

ok. bear with me. this is a bit tough to troubleshoot with text. are you using a simple instrument track for the tts? bring up preferences/midi/devices - make sure the mpk is checked in input devices (there should be 2 entries for it - check them both). make sure the midi out for the mpk is also checked and the microsoft gs wavetable synth is not.

Well, great video ("MIDI for beginners"), but while it all seems pretty straight forward... choose this, select this, click this, choose sound, and Voilà - sound. But it doesn't cover if you... choose this, select this, click this, choose sound, and Voilà - nada. The problem I'm having now... problems... is that it is inconsistent... I have a new project going, it's not crashing anymore, but I can only hear my chosen instrument when the track is running, usually... sometimes I get sound when it's static but not reliably or permanently... no sound, hit play (or record)... then I get sound. Hit stop, no sound. Then, often notes will start sounding and I can't stop them until I stop the track (which also happens on playback sometimes). And something that I can't find is randomly triggering the "patterns" on the low end of the keyboard in the SessionDrummer3 patch. Still struggling with drums sounding simultaneously with other sounds, whether echo is on or off. Tried buffer sizes. Also, fighting latency.

In fairness it does cover a couple of instances where there's nada.... I never edited the mistakes and wrong selections out as I thought it served a purpose of how easy it is to get nada. If you are getting nothing when the transport isn't running it sounds like the audio engine is stopping. You can turn that on in the transport bar (bottom left icon in the transport display) or if you check "Always stream audio through FX", in Prefs-->Audio--->Playback & Recording it will help stop it turning off in the first place.

As you can see, I continued to edit that last post as the manifold recurring issues came to mind. I checked the Audio Engine and it is on, but even if I turn it off it comes on again as soon as I hit play and doesn't go off when I hit stop. And the "always stream audio through FX" was checked. I am trying to follow the video step by step, but there are differences that make it difficult... as a for instance, when the TTS-1 is added and the OK button is selected, in the video the TTS-1 panel comes right up on its own... that doesn't happen for me, not a big deal as I can just go double click the icon and it comes up, but took a bit to figure that out. Also, when the output is changed the pull down menu offers Cakewalk TTS-1... mine doesn't. It offers; master, metronome, preview, reverb, drums, parallel compression, toms, cymbals and percussion. As a rule, my output seems to always have to be set to "Master" to get any sound. Right now, I have instruments selected... echoes on, if I open the TTS-1 panel and hit preview I can hear the sounds, but not when pressing keys on the MPK261. As another, for instance... I thought I had it right... input set to MPK261 Omni, output to Master, banks and patches set to Piano 1 and I was actually playing the piano patch from the keyboard. Then it just went away, now, silence. Moving through settings, trying to get it back.

Okay, what is never said in the video, until it gets to the point where the output wasn't set, is that there has to be an audio track... I wasn't getting that. Does that mean an audio track for each midi track, or is it one audio track open for the project?

Sounds like you are using a Simple Instrument Track. I purposely used a separate MIDI and Audio track to demo the routing that is hidden by a SIT. Try setting the option to have separate tracks when you first load TTS-1. That is also where you find the option to have TTS-1 interface open on loading. There's a checkbox there for it. To select TTS-1 as an output you must have a MIDI track. The sequence is (Keyboard or MIDI clip)----->MIDI TRACK INPUT-------->MIDI TRACK OUTPUT------>TTS 1------->AUDIO TRACK INPUT----->MASTER BUSS. A Simple Instrument Track (SIT) cuts out much of the routing so you simply set an input and output straight to your master buss (or other downstream buss)

A tip that might help troubleshooting now and in the future: TTS-1 has a little green button that looks like a musical note at the bottom of every channel strip. This is an Audition button that triggers internal playback an instrument-appropriate musical phrase. If you hear sound when you click one of these buttons, your audio routing is all good, and you should check that MIDI is getting sent to TTS-1. On the other hand, if you see activity in the TTS-1 channel meter but don't hear anything, the output is not making it to your interface output or your monitoring system is not working. Follow the chain of I/O assignments and physical devices until you find the culprit.

I don't know if you're familiar with the Presonus AudioboxUSB, but there is no real control panel... the only thing on it is Sample rate (which I have at 44.1khz) and ASIO buffer size (set to 2048). Anywhere else to look at latency? It's so minor, but enough to make it hard to play along with other tracks.

The Presonus ASIO buffer size is to high. Try setting it to 128 or 256 in the Presonus client.

your description of your input sounds fishy. Load the TTS-1 test it like you did. If you want different instruments you can load them from the mixer. I set up my own "band" and have a different instrument in each of the 16 channels. Drums are in CH 10. You can save this as a pre set for future use. Now insert a blank midi track Set it's input to the keyboard controller Omni. Set the tracks output to the TTS-1. By setting a channel I get the different instruments. Done deal. Record away. Note that input echo has to be highlighted for the midi track. You won't hear anything if it's off. If this doesn't work then you have an issue with your midi cable or the controllers midi output. Other things to try before you jump out the window :) Maybe you need to re install the drivers for your audio interface Go to the web site check the version you have is up to date and re install it. There is also a very hi probability you have a bum midi cable. Swap it out. Have you run Latency Mon? background processes can cause weirdness on a PC. http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon
