Midi velocity too low from master keyboard (Korg SP200)

Hi all,

I have a problem which is beginning to seriously bug me...

My Korg SP200 master keyboard doesn't seem to transmit a high enough midi velocity to my soft synths. It's always been like that, but I've lived with it. As a stage piano in its own right, the sound is fine - it plays the internal sounds just great.

Even slamming it hard only gets me a velocity of around 80 at most through midi. My little Alesis Q25 works fine, but the Korg doesn't.

Is there a workaround that any of you might know of? Or do I just need to sell the keyboard and get a new one....

Thanks in advance!

The answer would be in the owners manual somewhere. As example my Roland has a slider and key combo that adjust the velocity. For piano you need full range but for Organ sounds a fixed velocity of 64  is a more realistic organ sound. It was built as a controller so that option is easily accessible.
Yours being made for piano performance and not a controller may not have the option and if it does it will be a matter of reading the instructions.

In bands I've always seen the keyboard players using a synth for organ / synth sounds and then a piano was always just for piano. So you might want to pick up a second controller just for that reason. A piano just doesn't play right for other stuff.
I really like my Roland A 49 because it sits nicely on my desk. It was only $120 and was one of the few that didn't feel like a cheap toy. I came with Sonar LE which I have now turned into Platinum for only $250.

Thank you - I trawled through the manual and it's midi capabilities seem rather lame. I can't find a way to adjust velocity on the actual piano.

Ironically, it's the VST piano sounds which suffer most when trying to play them.. :(

You can try scale MIDI velocity (that obviously affect dynamics). On MIDI track insert MIDI FX "Cakewalk FX"->"Velocity". Click on "Scale" and set "150%". That will change 80 to 120.

Note that you can use the same MFX from Process Effect menu to "bounce" the result (do not forget to disable MFX in the effect bin then).

Thanks for that idea - It kinda works, but it kinda takes away any subtlety in my playing. Quiet notes aren't quiet anymore. :(

Pianoteq, TruePianos, etc. have velocity curve inside VSTi. That should work better for your case then pure linear scaling.

I have seen only one MFX with arbitrary curve, and it is 32bit only. Writing such MFX is in my long term plans but that is not going to happened soon. The problematic part is GUI, in case you find the curve your need (using some VSTi which allows that) I can create an MFX with one hardcoded curve (that will take less than an hour).

Other direction: have you tried to set SP200 to light Touch Sensitivity and turn Local Off? Does it still produce upper velocity 80 in this case? I guess the Internet could be filled with bug reports about SP200 in case it is in general not able to send 127...

Thanks mate - I had a trawl through the internet and discovered a couple of posts stating that the SP200 was just a bit useless as a master keyboard.

I think the best bet is to sell up and move on!

I had a similar issue with my Alesis. The easiest way I have found is to use the Gain for the instrument in the mixing console. While this is likely not what it is 'supposed' to be used for, it works fine for me -  particularly well for the (demarc) setting for some of the Rhodes pianos.

All MIDI controllers suffer from this limitation - at least every one I've ever laid hands upon. My primary controller has the opposite problem as yours: it's too easy to hit 127 while playing (I'm heavy-handed). But I have another keyboard that you have to hit with a hammer to get full velocity. I stopped fretting over it long ago.

I don't worry about it because it's ultimately a non-issue, especially for virtual pianos. This is because the ideal velocity range for each sampled piano is going to be different anyway.

If, for example, you record a MIDI track and route it to Piano1.nki and then decide it's too mellow/harsh/roomy/whatever and pull up Piano2.nki to try in its place, chances are the velocities won't be right for the alternate instrument. Sometimes quiet notes disappear, sometimes big hits sound like thumbtacks in your ears. You'll often end up editing some notes or shifting the entire track up or down in velocity using the Velocity slider in the track header (nice, because it's non-destructive).

More likely, you're going to need to reduce the dynamic range: make the quiet notes less quiet and the loud notes less loud. For that, you'll want a virtual instrument that allows you to define a custom velocity curve. Chances are you'll only need to set it up once to suit your controller and playing style, and won't need to fiddle with it again. If your virtual piano lacks that feature, try the velocity-scaling feature as suggested by aslow3. My own experience with it has been less than satisfactory, but it's worth a shot.

My advice: keep your controller if you're comfortable with it. If you do upgrade, get something that has a nicer action, more ergonomic controls, or that feels more like a real piano. Or less like a piano, if you do a lot of non-piano instruments. As long as you feel comfortable with the controller and can play fluidly on it, let software take care of the rest.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
