Migrating from XP to new DAW Windows 7

All you guys that have done this, did you use a tool? Did you find some really good resource of information and instruction? Did a google search, and there is just an overwhelming amount of 'stuff'. Planning on ordering the new DAW next week, but I want to be as ready as I can for the change. Thanks, Milt.

Thanks for the reply, perfectprint, but I'm not installing Windows 7 on my present computer, I am getting a new computer, and want to migrate all my programs, plugins, samples, project files, etc. to the new computer that will be running Windows 7 64. Windows 7 will already be installed in the new machine. Thanks again.

    didnt mention that.

All programs will have to be reinstalled. Best bet is to reinstall all plugins (although some you can just copy over the .dll file to your new vst folder's). Wav samples and projects can be copied to appropriate reference folders or drives.

It will probably take the nest part of day to get yourself sorted, but its pretty easy (assuming you have all your install files/dvd's).

These are the steps I would take -
    1. Remove any bloatware
    2. Install antivirus (MS Security Essential), soundcard and drivers.
    3. Install Sonar and adjust settings to get audio to work
    4. Install vsts and run plugin manager
    5. copy sessions and samples.
    6. Make windows tweaks in above thread (core parking, fault tolerant heap etc)

I've never heard of using a "Tool", just tedious work. Since you're getting a pre-configured PC, you'll pretty much have to reload everything from their respective CD/DVD's.

I don't know how much you have in audio/project files. I would try to network it over or something.  But if you feel like using media, that's more straight forward.

Sonar, Les Paul Studio, FTU, puter, plugs.........

Lots of threads in these forums about this recently.

Major point: do NOT replace the current OS. You will need it.
Some projects/plugs will NOT work with w7.
You will forget to have exported some presets,...
You will need to open some projects, make notes, remove plugs, and save to new name,...

    Lots of threads about this.
