Mike Senior's "Mixing Secrets" really stinks - but not how you'd expect

I bought this book a few months ago and it's really excellent. I have absolutely no problem with the content at all....except that it stinks. Yep, it really hums something rotten. It's a horrible chemically smell that has a touch of rotten eggs. I know some books have that "new book smell" but this is ridiculous. And it hasn't gotten any better over time! I just took it off the shelf and it still pongs. I don't know what the publisher has done to the pages but I wish they hadn't.

Glad I bought the Kindle version... I have a very sensitive nose.

Maybe it's been used for bathroom reading before you got it?

Hmm so some budding George Costanza could have gotten his hands on it is what you're saying. Well that makes me feel soooo much better.

To be honest I really cannot describe the smell. It is bizarre. I mean they're good quality pages and all....thick and glossy...but I'd rather have thin and matte if it means odor-free. I'm even starting to worry that I'm breathing in toxic fumes when I'm reading it.

Nearly bought the Kindle version but there's just something about textbooks that makes me prefer the real version. I think it's all the flicking back and forward that I end up doing.

    It could be Formaldehyde.

It's used in book bindings in the adhesive.

Oh well, formaldehyde, that's alright then! Jeez am I going to have to throw this book out? I feel like it's killing me!

You'd be hard pressed to find something without Formaldehyde in it now days.

It's in the glue that holds particle board together in furniture, books, carpet, curtains, upholstery, high pressure laminate, all kinds of stuff.

I found out in Biology class in High School when we were dissecting Formaldehyde soaked critters that I'm highly allergic to it.

Yeah, and it gives flavor to Budweiser too.

Hummm... so I saw this and thought.... I wonder?

So when I went downstairs I picked it up..... It's on the night stand.... I'm reading it again ...a chapter every so often....

So I picked it up.... sniffed..... nothing unusual.... so not to be deterred.... I opened the book and stuck my nose way down in the pages and took a nice big whiff.......

Reminiscent of musty armpits.... I guess you were correct.... it does stink.

It kind of smells like old cabbage water.

Send an email to the publisher.  You'd probably be doing them a favor, and there's a good chance they'd send you a replacement without charge.  FWIW, my copy is odor free.  I even read it twice, so I would have noticed for sure if there was an aroma problem.
