Mind boggling Problem

Ok so I just got a new laptop and a FireStudio Project (the 8 input one) and I installed everything..drivers, software, etc.

When I open Sonar (or any audio software) the PreSonus box isn't recognized by anything, except to say "PreSonus microphone" instead of "8 in, 8 out" like on my desktop setup.  And even then, i can't select the "presonus mic" in any of the programs.  I don't have any choice at all except for the onboard mic, which I unchcked from the drivers list.

The strange thing is, the speakers/box work for playing general music through the computer, rather than the onboards.  So there is a signal going through, the box/speakers work, but I can't get the inputs to work in ANY audio program. (tried Sonar, Cubase, and Guitar Rig)

It's a fairly new laptop w/ Vista

PLEASE any suggestions?  My mind is officially boggled.

The laptop is not running a TI chipset Firewire controller.
This is is likely the problem...

You want a Texas Instruments chipset Firewire controller.  This yields maximum performance and compatibility.
Some audio interfaces won't work at all with some Firewire controllers. (ie: MOTU units won't work at all with a Jmicron Firewire controller).  Often, if you have a crap Firewire controller, the audio interface will work... but performance will be less than ideal.

FWIW, Every time I see a post where a Firewire audio interface isn't working as expected, the OP is always using a non TI chipset Firewire controller.   I see scores of similar posts every month...
With a laptop, there's not a lot that can be done to resolve the problem.
With a desktop, you can disable the onboard crap Firewire controller... as use a good Texas Instuments chipset PCI/e unit.

You can get an express-card TI chipset Firewire controller, but...
The express-card slot in most laptops is using the same (crap) brand chipset as the Firewire controller... so you're not really circumventing the problem.
ie:  With laptops using 02Micro Firewire controllers (also use 02Micro express-card controller), you'll achieve better performance directly connecting to the 02Micro Firewire controller (as opposed to installing an express-card TI chipset Firewire controller into the 02Micro controlled express-card slot).

send it back and get one that works for audio or buy a USB interface
but i would at least try the TI Express card first just to eliminate (but you have about a 1% chance of
    it working)

Give the express-card TI controller a shot (as Scott mentioned), but I wouldn't bank on it solving the problem.

If the express-card TI chipset Firewire controller doesn't work:
If you can return the laptop, that would be my first choice.
If not, if you can return the audio interface, I'd do that... and go with one of the better USB units.

    inRed2,

    Just another thought/question...

Are you using the latest version of the universal control driver from Presonus? I remeber the version that came on my disc was really poorly thought out. I also had issues with only one input showing in Sonar and there were a bunch of hoops to jump through to get them all to show and map correctly. The latest drivers (3.5.0.171)  are working "ok" on my non-TI card. Probably not as low a latency or as much stability as could be with a TI chipset card, but useable. The guys posting above are absolutley correct in that regard, but I just want to make sure you have the new drivers as your issue sounds very similar to a problem I had with the old ones on the same device.

    Good Luck,
