Minor issue - Must connect USB Interface only after a project is opened

This is kind of minor but something I would like to get sorted none the less! So I got a new audio interface (Focurite Scarlett 2i2) - I'm using Sonar Producer 8.5 and I am on a laptop (Windows 8) - Basically if I plugin the interface to USB before opening Sonar, all the windows sounds go to it rather than the laptop speakers - I thought that was worth noting.
So when I load up Sonar, open a project and when I put the master bus to the Focusrite - there is a dialog that says that it can't play, that maybe it's already in use.
However, if I start Sonar first whilst the USB is unplugged - it starts up with an error dialogue as no interface. When I click past that and open a project anyway and THEN connect the interface, a dialogue pops up saying that it's recognized a new USB device in sonar - now magically it's working!

With my previous interfaces, I would plug it in any time, open projects and it would work fine so this is new to me. This is the first time I'm not using ASIO4All though.
I have gone into control panel > hardware and sound > manage audio devices -- and see that on playback the USB is set as the 'default device' so I set that to the laptop speakers and now whenever I plugin the USB, windows sounds remain on the speakers... But still if I open Sonar, it will only work if I insert the USB after opening a project still.

As I say it's a minor, its actually working, be nice to sort it if possible though, just plugin at any time and start Sonar and away! :)

Thanks guys!

Is it connected to a USB 3 or USB 2 port?

I believe the port I'm using is USB3, I haven't actually tried the USB2 ports - the assumption that 3 would be faster/better than 2 somehow!

Just tried it with USB2 and that has fixed it! Nice one, it's so simple I'm not sure I would have thought of that. Thanks :)
