Mio MIDI USB adapter issues

I've wanted to incorporate midi keyboard effects into my home recording for a while, but I was a little cash strapped and decided to go to cheap route. I bought a used keyboard, a Casio LK-40 (it's probably over 10 years old, but works great), and a Mio 1 in 1 out USB to MIDI adapter to connect it to my laptop and Sonar. However, I've had problems setting up the device properly. When I try to select mio as in the input and output device in the sonar midi options, sonar crashes. If I only select Mio as the input device, and select Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth as the output, which is the only other output option besides "none," I can see the keyboard register on the recording track, but I can't hear any sound. Am I missing something? Is my keyboard just too old? Is Mio not Sonar friendly? What the heck am I doing wrong?

Your equipment should be fine unless it is malfunctioning.

The Mio "in" plugged into your keyboard MIDI "out" will bring MIDI data from the keyboard to the computer.
The Mio "out" plugged into your keyboard MIDI "in" will send MIDI data from the computer to your keyboard.
The Mio will not bring audio data "sound" either into or out of the keyboard. What are you using for an audio interface and speakers?

Why the Mio set as a MIDI output device should crash Sonar is a mystery, what do you mean by "crash?" Make sure you do not have in and out reversed on the Mio to keyboard.

If you want to make your keyboard itself generate sound, you need to send MIDI data (output of a Sonar MIDI track) to the Mio. The keyboard will then generate sound just as if you were pressing the keys, and the sound will have to come out of your keyboard itself either by internal speakers or by audio out to an external speaker, or by an audio out from the keyboard to an audio interface set as the input for a Sonar audio track and that audio track must have its output set to an audio interface connected to a speaker. If you do not want to have the built in synthesizer on the keyboard itself make the sound, you do not need to assign the Mio as a MIDI output device.

If you want to have pressing the keys on the keyboard make sound and record MIDI inside Sonar, then the Mio must be set as the MIDI input to a Sonar MIDI track, and that MIDI track must have some kind of softsynth assigned as its output. The synth must be the input to a Sonar audio track, which audio track has its output going to an audio interface.

Check the tutorial on how to use softsynths in the Sonar manual.

slartabartfast, you are a godsend. I didn't realize I needed to make the MIDI track the input to an audio track. Thanks for the help. Problem solved.

I have a similar situation; but I'm using a Midi controller keyboard called "Quick Shot" Midi Controller.
It has a Midi Out port, a game port, a headphone jack and a power connector jack.
I have a very old Cakewalk 2.0 (with a 3.0 sequencing engine) loaded on my old Windows Vista tower.
The sound card it has is the typical on-the-motherboard 3 mini jack ports and 4 USB ports in back
and 2 mini jack ports on the front of the tower; which also has two USB ports.
Since the Quick Shot is NOT a synth, it cannot playback sound through itself. It does not have a Midi IN port.
All it does is send Midi controller data OUT. Here is what I have done:
I connected my Mio 1 in 1 out USB to the midi (white) connector on the keyboard, then the Mio USB connector to my computer. I load Cakewalk 2.0, and open the Settings and then Midi Devices.
On the left side Mio is listed as an Input, by itself.
On the right side, Mio is listed along with a Microsoft Midi Mapper and
a Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, as Outputs.
I cannot select any outputs other than Mio.
Neither the GS Synth nor the Midi Mapper are allowed to load, and an error message says
that either one is "already in use".
I open a new Cakewalk file and click the "Rec" button and start recording.
I play several keys on the keyboard making sure to play a pattern that is unique enough
for me to remember. There is NO SOUND coming from my computer, and I can't see any activity
that indicates I am recording anything in the new Cakewalk file.
I press stop, save the "untitled" file as some 8 digit name, disconnect the Mio from the USB port,
and Exit Cakewalk.
Then I reopen Cakewalk again, open the file I saved, open Midi Devices and select Midi Mapper or GS Synth
as the output device. I do not reconnect mio, and there is no input device connected or listed.
Now I press the "Play" button for the file in cake walk, and I can hear the unique pattern I played previously!
So...my obvious questions are: Is Mio blocking the external output of the sound card in my computer?
OR...is the version of Cakewalk 2.0 unable to correctly interface with the Mio device for output in Real time?
Since I'm relying solely on my computer sound card to generate the synth sound, and I'm sending the correct controllers to the card via Mio; I don't understand why I can't hear OR see the recording occur in Real time.
Please help an old Geek of the ancient computer past to understand what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you sincerely for your reply.

Never mind. This site is useless. I figured out what was wrong, on my own.
Good-bye
