Missing MIDI device on XP

This isn't a Cakewalk problem but I thought someone here might be able to help.

I can't get to the MIDI on my Realtek AC97 on board sound. I know I will not be happy with it but I get stuck on things that don't work. I already use several software synthesizers and an excellent external synthesizer.

The Realtek AC97 works fine and it passes the all of dxdiag tests including the MIDI test. The problem is it is not listed as an available MIDI device by XP to any application. Both the GS Wavetable SW synthesizer and my external synthesizer are available.
