Missing VST dlls for older projects

Multiple versions of Dim Pro installed. DLLs in folders that are included in Plugin Scan folders. Plugins are successfully scanned and included. However, some older projects report missing plugins.

Is there a way to find the program used with those older plugins? Is that information buried in the project file (it's gotta be there, right?) or in the registry (doubt it)?

BTW, I since started to record in the track description the plugin, the patch (and any tweaks) and the MIDI assignment (channel and device). It will be very helpful in the event this happens again as I know I can open a project file in Notepad and find that info.

Anyone have any tips for finding what I'm missing? The "patch" names (programs) assigned selected for the plugin?

Unfortunately, SONAR lacks any tools for examining projects offline. It would be very useful to be able to generate reports that list the plugins used in a project or a group of projects. The CWP file format, however, is proprietary, undocumented and subject to change from revision to revision. I know this because I once started to write a program to parse project files and report on their contents - I quickly hit a brick wall and abandoned the effort.

All you can do is open the project and make note of the plugins it complains about. If it names a DLL that you don't recognize, there's a good chance somebody here will know what it is.

I have old projects that can only be opened today because my inadequate system had mandated that I freeze everything. It's a good argument for freezing or bouncing everything. Nowadays, I also keep copies of every VST I've ever used or even demo'd on a CD for safekeeping.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I've tried to parse the contents of the CWP too, only to find limited info in a readable format. The plugin missing is one of the Dim Pros I have installed and scanned, just not sure why it's reported missing. I was just hoping there was a quick way to find what program I had set for the plugin so I could just re-insert the updated DimPro plugin and be on my merry way. Oh well, back to tweaking!

Perhaps the missing DimPro is the DXi version rather than the VSTi.  Installing the v1.5 update deletes the DXi, which is no longer supported.

in my case, the problems are VST, not DXi. This seems to be a problem that shows up a lot for people, based on searching the forum. But there's no real solution, right?

Actually, my problem is both, now that i've hacked at it a while longer.
