Missing plugins after new install

Hey chaps! Just a follow up post to address an issue I have had with my new 64 bit install!

Some members on here already know that I went from a 32bit version of Sonar 8.5.3 to the 64bit version!

However, my old setup was from years ago and so my plugins folders were really messy and jumbled up! I had folders within folders and in multiple locations all over the C drive instead of just one folder like Steinberg/Vsts

Having this new install has made me want to tidy everything up for when I move to knew PCs in the future etc......So when installing the new 64bit versions on my vst's I also "Copied" the old folders and vsts from my "messy" previous Sonar and put them neatly within ONE folder on my C/Program/VSTS folder

However as you can imagine when I went to load an old project, I got the MISSING plugins warning!

Its real frustrating because they are not missing they are simply NOT in the location that Sonar expects to see them!

I have just spent an hour creating new menu layouts from the plugins that are in my new "neat" vst folder, and I am well aware that I can just scan the "old messy" locations and it will find them and my old projects will load up fine! The problem is that this will create multiple versions of the same plugins and therefore we are back to MESSY again!

My question is, is there anyway around this? Just off the top of my head, a sonar project must contain information on the location of the plugins, which is why I am having this missing plugins warning! So is there anyway to tamper with this? Some way to edit this information so I can adjust where its "looking" for plugins?

Or maybe a better solution that you guys can think of? Or am I gonna have to pay the ultimate price for not being neat and tidy all those years ago when I started on Sonar?

Hey chaps! At the very least is there any way of finding out "Where" exactly sonar is expecting to find these plugins that it says is missing?

I am at the stage where its telling me plugins are missing, even though they are stored (probably in a different folder than sonar espects them) If I could only find out WHERE its expecting to see them, I could move them to the correct folder so that my projects will open up correctly

    Hi DeanahGuitarist,

Please ensure that your new folder is iisted in Sonar's VST Scan folder path.  This can be found under preferences in the VST section . Then you can try a 'reset' and rescan all vst's. IHTH....

    Hi LunaTech!

Thanks for the response! Yep the new folder is listed however my old sonar projects are expecting to see the vsts in a specific folder! (I was hoping they would give me a message like - Missing plugin - please choose from the nearest match below)

Unfortunalty this doesnt happen, instead the project file is expecting to see the vsts in a specific folder, I just need to somehow find out what folder that is so that I can put it there! Hope that makes sense

I think if the dlls are in a different location your are going to have to go through and update (delete,re-add) your plugins. You can try to open a plugin-layout file in a text editor and see if there is any information in there but I have not tried this.

Are the plug-ins missing VSTs or missing 32bit DirectX plug-ins. Since this is a recent move from 32bit to 64bit SONAR, is it possible the missing plug-ins are not available because 64bit versions do not exist. This can happen with DirectX plug-ins because they are host specific. IOW, there is no bridge for DirectX plug-ins and some were not ported to 64bit.

    Hey Scook!

Its strange because I went from a 32 bit Sonar to 64 bit

Have some 64 bit vsts but I have made sure the plugin manager has scanned the OLD 32bit vst folder so that my old projects will still load like they used to!

However, despite the folders being in the same place as they were before, my projects are still showing that they are missing? I have scanned multiple times but for some reason its showing that they are missing!

Weird thing is they are NOT missing, in fact, I can call up a new session and choose the same old 32bit vsts that I used to, however its my old projects that are not loading properly due to the fact it THINKS the plugins are missing

If only there were some way to edit INSIDE the project file to point the missing plugins to where they are indeed located!

The location of VSTs does not matter as long the scanner can find them. Plug-in paths are not stored projects.

Hmmm Thats strange! In your opinion what do you think the problem could be?

For example I just tried to open an old project that has BFD1 as the drum software, upon loading it tells me that BFD is missing, however it is NOT missing because I can load it up fine from the menu and it works 100%

I have had this same issue, its some funky way Sonar 8 and X3 and now platinum's VSTs are linked.
Are the plugins that are missing older plugins that belong with the Cakewalk family?
I can never see them in X3 64 bit... But all show up in X3 32 bit mode... I don't know how this will word for platinum 32 bit, in 64 bit they don't show up.

    peace!

    So...

What about testing an old project by "replacing" the offending vst on the track and see if it starts working... This could be very manual but also could give clues to Cake about what is happening.I had a kind of similar issue with a bus that would not play until I replaced it... IHTH

Hey Dave! Nope they arent cakewalk plugins they are things like BFD and T-Racks, Unfortunatley I was unable to have both installations of 32 bit Sonar and 64 bit Sonar on my system at one time (see my posts last week) I really wish that was possible! Can you just confirm if you are able to have both a 64bit Sonar AND a 32bit Sonar on your system at the same time, meaning you can load each one up whether you fancy it?

Hey LunaTech! Yep I have tried that but unfortunately its the actual settings that I am desperate to load! So even though I CAN just replace that vst with the working one, I am unable to remember all the individual settings etc

Yep already doing that bud! Is it normal to not be able to have both 32bit and 64bit on one system at any time? I find that once I install the other one it cancels out the working one and refuses to load

I have so yes, well I am.. There is a bit bridge that is suppose to bridge 32bit in 64bit mode I have had a hard time getting all plugins to work in x3pro. I have gotten a bit bridge errors with X3, I'm not that far into platinum yet..
I kind of think it has something to do with Sonar 8 32 and a conflict with 64 bit X3, just what I think...
I have been working on this problem for at lease to months... sometime the VSTs work sometimes they don't and the problem is for me with IK but now after installing platinum 64 basically over 32 bit X3. everything is works except old cakewalk plugs.. I don't have any BFD plugs ...

update: I just tried to open a sonar 8 CWB project into platinum and I got the same error... even though I have all plugs installed now it still says they are missing...

Thats so weird because when I install sonar 64bit it works fine, but then I install 32bit Sonar and that also works fine, but when I try and load up 64 again it just wont load up

I don't know. I have uninstalled and reinstalled from every point including re formatting the hard drive.. once every two weeks since October trying different setups. but I really believe that for your problem, well mine to... you can't just import Sonar 8 projects into x3 or platinum and read and replace some plugins...

Deanahguitarist, I know this may sound crazy but hear me out. Sonar is very odd at times in how it sees plugins. Look at your plugin list, whether its default or a custom one you made. Load it up and take a look at where the plugin used to be. It's probably a italic or "ghosted" inscription of the plugins name (which means it is "missing" in some way). Now, simply add the so-called missing plugin back to the list, in that location of the list. Save the plugin layout, close sonar, and open your project again. Do you still get the msg?

    Hello,

Question, Are your 32bit and 64 bit plugins  in completely separate folder locations?.. I have found that when I only use my 64bit version of plugins and Jbridge the 32bits that I absolutely must have, my stability has increased. My point is that having them all in the same place seemed to cause me issues with the plugins and stability.. So, My suggestion is that once the plugs are separated into their folders and the respective versions of Sonar only pointing to their versions (32bit, 64bit) of plugins. I am wondering if it is not possible to then go to the 32bit version of Sonar to see if the settings are retained and then making those adjustments in the 64bit version.. Just processing out loud... IHTH....

The problem is with the bit bridge and how it saves or changes the plugin data somehow with in a project.. not a problem per say.. just the way it works.... If I take a x3 project and open it up in Sonar 8 the same thing happens...
Cakewalk may want to look into this but under the circumstances with everyone ignoring me and now for what I have no idea... well whatever...
