Missing waveform and midi information after recording
Hi, guys, This has happened to me a few times now, so thought to post it here to see if anyone else is experiencing it. Upon completing a recording - I see the waveforms for digital audio and MIDI information in the track view. I save the project (I'm confident I saved it). For some reason, Sonar froze AFTER I saved the project. Upon restarting Sonar and opening up the recent project - all the recently recorded / saved waveforms don't show up in the Track View. I go into the audio folder - and the WAV files are there (confirming that I saved everything) , so I can simply re-import them back into the project - but I can't find the MIDI data to reimport? So, 3 questions: 1. Is anybody else experiencing this? It's happened to me 3 times now. 2. Where does Sonar store the MIDI data for songs - I can't find it to reimport it into the project? Is it integrated into the cwp file? 3. Any ideas on a solution? Thanks Russ

I am not experiencing this. Sadly all our footers and post counts have disappeared in these forums, are you using X3D or another version of Sonar? I believe the MIDI data to be embedded in the Cakewalk project folder file itself but please wait for a second opinion.

Thanks Alex for the quick reply - I can still view post counts and signatures - they don't show for you? But.. thanks for pointing that out - as I just realized my signature was outdated, still listing Sonar X2a - so I just updated it. Yes, I'm running 3D producer - with an RME UFX - all the latest drivers, etc. Also. when you say 'embedded in the cakewalk project folder' - you're referring to the individual project folder per song, right? I looked in there and didn't see anything except for the cwp file & and audio data directory containing the WAV files.

So I've learnt today never to click on the "Essentials" button in the forums, thanks for letting me know I can now see footers, and yes I mean file not folder sorry.

So if the midi information is embedded within the cakewalk project file - how do I re-import it back into the track? Is that possible?

AFAIK, if the MIDI doesn't get loaded with the project, there's no way you can pick it from the project file.

I am confused by this post, so let me step back a second... when triggering a synth, MIDI data can be recorded, but the "Wave Form Preview" is essentially an "audio history" of the generated synth, and not an audio (wav) file. Is this what you are referring to?

Yes, MIDI data are saved as part of the CWP file. If they don't show up on re-opening, and it's not a display issue (e.g. hidden tracks, MIDI events start further out in the timeline, etc.), then something went wrong with the save and the MIDI data are likely not recoverable.

Mettelus - Not, I recorded both audio and midi at the same time - no soft synths loaded. I was tracking both a vocal mic and midi from V drums. Upon conclusion of tracking, I saved the project - both the digital audio waveform (from the vocal recording) and the MIDI information (from the V drums) were both clearly visible in the track view, however shortly thereafter (about 30 seconds), Sonar crashed and once I restarted it and reopened the project, neither the digital audio nor the MIDI information was visible in the Track View. I was able to reimport the wav file into the project for the digital audio, but wasn't able to find the midi file to reimport that. Thanks Brundlefly. Very frustrating - something doesn't make sense, given I could see the data in the project AFTER I saved it. I wonder if the crash started 20-30 seconds before the application actually freezing, thus causing something to go wrong during the save. Very strange.

I've never had a failure on save, but it does sound like that's what happened. Audio files are not deleted unless you close without saving, but the fact that the link to the file (i.e. the clip) was missing from the audio track also suggests that crash was due to the save process going awry. Definitely a bummer, but certainly not common. If it happens again, you should try to get a crash dump for Cakewalk dev to look at. Most likely some issue with plugin compatibility or a hardware issue on your PC (e.g. bad RAM).

In order to try and find out what happened, you might want to check out the Windows Event ViewerLook for Sonarpdr.exe, right click on the red icon, Copy -> Copy Details As Text.Thanks...

Does this crashing take place with other tracking settings than mic/V-drums as well? Is it (seemingly) independent or dependant on what kind of project you're running, what VSTs are included and what you're tracking? Did you install any new stuff or updates prior to the occurrance (is that a word?) of the problem? I understood you never experienced this earlier, so something must be different now... You have an RME so I assume it's a normal mic you're using, not USB (sorry, had to ask :o)

Hi Kalle,, My platform is generally extremely stable, but the crashes seem to happen when recording MIDI or when using my Waves GTR plugin if I recall correctly. The Waves GTR plug tends to be unstable enough over the years to dissuade me from using it. I also could have a USB both are on different USB ports, but I have noticed flakiness when using both simultaneously. Switching to a different guitar amp sim & not using my control surface when recording MIDI seemed to be a good workaround until I can figure out the underlying issue. I'm not using a USB mic - I generally use a Neumann TLM102 or Rode NT-2. I was more curious whether it was possible to reimport the MIDI data into the project, as I was able to do with the audio data, but it sounds like that's not possible. Thanks Alex - I will look into the Windows event viewer to help isolate the issue. Where can I find Sonar's crash dump in case I want to send that to Cakewalk Support? Thanks All! Russ

I have come up with a solution to the issue of how Midi is hidden with in a CWP file. You can take a CWP file, open it, and if you save it as a MIDI file it will store just the midi data. I do this to "future proof" my projects. Now the Midi data could be opened in any DAW.

I totally get that idea although I'm not doing this myself. It actually would be a nice feature to have this happen automatically for backup purposes (keep the project file format as it is). However nobody knows when MIDI and indeed the MIDI file will become obsolete, it will happen one day, but unlikely any time soon (30 years of MIDI now).

It's funny that the 2 file formats I have used the most since my first Computer (Atari) in 1985 both MID and TXT can still be opened on any modern computer, PC and Mac and even Lynux. I don't save every project this way, only the ones I'm making my backing tracks with. I put a lot of time into the drums and that is of the most value to me. Audio seems to be saved as you go and is easily retrieved, but I put more time into MIDI on some projects and it sucks if that is a "hidden" entity by my software. Therefore the 15 seconds to do the "save as mid" is worth it to me.
