Mix Critique Please...

Hi,

If you have a moment, would you please give these songs a quick listen.  I'm happy with them, but a little concerned that the high end may be a little too sizzly.  I did all of the recording, mixing, mastering, etc.  Your comments will be appreciated...

Neither is excessively sizzly.  You could roll off the top on the cymbals and tambourine on the second song just a  tiny bit for my taste.

I'm just a Newb here, so don't listen to me. But for what it's worth :
In the first song I thought yes, the highs are a bit searing, e.g. on the harp parts. I also thought the song might profit from a bit more foundation in the low end overall.
The second example sounds fine to my untrained ears.

    Both great songs!

Sound OK here but these are ageing furry alien ears so perhaps others may hear more sizzle.

I'm older than Wookiee and I too do not hear sizzle. For me there was certain lack of sheen to the mixes.

Mix-wise, maybe a tiny cut to the harp's highs in the first tune, and the same for the left-side guitar in the second song.   And maybe a bit more presence in the lead vocals.

Mixes aside... nice songs!   Catchy melodies, clever lyrics and nicely arranged.  The second one in particular is like a lost Motown song.  Cool.

    Thanks for the comments.

I had a heck of a time EQ-ing the harmonica.  I had to cut some of the frequencies severely to get what I have now.  You chould have heard it before!  lol

Glad to hear that comments are generally postive.

Like Wookie and bapu, I've begun to question my ability to accurately ascertain high frequencies properly due to rock and rolling for many years!  This was the primary reason for creating this thread - I was looking for confirmation that I'm in the ballpark on the high freqs.

    Thanks!

The production is good.  I can hear all instruments very well.  I heard a pop on the lead vocal - maybe check out a HP filter for it.  The lead vocal sits right where it should.  I think you could use some more instrumentation in the bridge.  Like the harp.

What I hear is a nice top end with the high mids quite prominent and sounding very clean. Perhaps a little air right up the top might help but that could be just a personal thing.
What I miss most is a bit of bottom end, it sounds like most everything has been high passed and it's taken all the drive and feel from the rhythm. Might be my system but I'm listening on headphones and I would have expected to hear most of the low end and I'm just not getting a lot.
    Hope this helps.

Bapu, you said: For me there was certain lack of sheen to the mixes.

I'm curious...  How would you go about adding "sheen"?

rebel007...  Yes, the bass may be a little light on these mixes. I always find it a challenge to find the "right" amount of bass.  I monitor in several different locations (including my car) and try to find an acceptable happy medium.  Also, with less bass, I'm able to boost the apparent volume of the tracks without clipping.  The Loudness Wars creeping in!   Thanks for the input.  I will take this into consideration on future mixes.

    Congratulations.

I've listened to the first track. The mix seems general fine to me. I'd agree that the bass could do with being a little increased. I'd also suggest slightly turning down, or reducing the treble a bit, on the shaker in the chorus.

    Hi Dave,

I've listened to Sun shinin down on me, and it sounds almost done. The only thing that is missing is "bring UP the horns"!
You might not remember..., but I did record 95 % of the horns on this track for you (and added some bits to the arrangement) - on quite a few different horns.
It's supercool that you use my recordings from back then, but a "thank you, my hornblowing friend from up north" would be nice and honest.

    Apologies to you!

It had been such a long time since I worked on this project, I unfortunately misplaced your name and contact info.  I searched old threads on the forum here, but came up with nothing.

So...  A belated THANK YOU for helping out on this track.  It would be a mere shadow of itself without your contributions.

    Thanks, and again my apologies!
