Mix My Song: Here's The Bundle!
I had a lot of fun with this before so I'm doing it again. I have posted a link to my bundle file as well as a link so you can listen and see if you even like the song. I've gotty a sloppy unmixed version for you to hear on Soundclick. The only thing I ask is that you post a link to your particular mix and you share a little bit about how you mixed it so others can learn. You can mix the song any way you want and get as experimental as you want. You can even track your own stuff into it if you want. You'll need Winrar to uncompress the bundle file. Here is the song so you can listen and see if you wanna do it. "Winding Highway" http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8111346 Here is the link to the bundle http://www.filedropper.com/windinghighwaysonar Have Fun! Travis

hey Travis, nice tune.. nice willi nelson-like vocals.. and a nice collection of guitars!! your mix is pretty good already, but for me it was a bit too "dry".. so I started to use some reverb.. I also used some eq to brighten up the individual tracks.. (probably too much in the end) I also tried to get rid of the "metronome clicks" in the middle of the song and tried to reduce the noise from the start and ending.. now I hear that I introduced some noise on the vocals due to parallel-voice-compression.. I would have to need to automate that.. on some parts the vocals stand up too much, probably also a case for automation.. :) anyway.. my favorite effects are compressors.. so, I ended up using them on almost every track.. just to tame the peaks a bit.. all UAD-plugins and Melodyne (instead of non-owning "Autotune" on vocals). From a musical side I think there should be more happening on the chorus.. I didn't find a way to pull-up a track to get the behaviour that I was looking for.. on the other side that could be left for future drums, if you'd plan any.. anyway.. here's the mp3: http://www.headarrangement.com/Cakewalk/winding_highway_frankhaasmix.mp3 and here's the project: http://www.headarrangement.com/Cakewalk/Winding%20Highway1c_frankhaasmix.cwp

Thanks for taking a stab at it, Frank. I am at work and don't have speakers so I will check out the mix tonight. I have thought about dropping some drums into it just to add more options. Maybe I will. Thanks Travis

HERE is a link to my stab at it. I tried to do as little 'engineering' as possible. It's a simple song and it seemed to respond well to a simple approach. The short highlights: I bussed the vocals into a single compressor as well as the guitars. I used two algorithmic reverbs; a plate for the vocals and a hall for the other elements. I also used a touch of auto-panning on the percussion parts. There was some bad popping on the bass track that I did my best to correct. Consider this your "one minute free" ;-) J

Thanks Jonas, I'm gonna have a listen today after work. I think the popping you're hearing is the stand up bass. It was from a sample library and I think it's just the sound of the finger interacting with the string and it's slapback.

Frank and Jonas, Thanks again for your mixes. I am sending you each a private message so I can get more indepth. Also, if anyone else downloads the file, please don't use the scratch acoustic guitar. I'm sorry, but I forgot to delete that before I bundled up the file. It's off in a bunch of spots and comes in at the wrong spots.

I have responded via email where I could. Kevo, I noticed you changed a couple of notes in the harmonica solo. I was thinking of retracking the harmonica because it was a little monotonous. Your change of a couple notes seemed to help a little. Any chance you could send me your version of the harmonica solo? Thanks again to everyone who is participating. It gives me ideas on what I can do different and hopefully is an entertaining thread.

http://www.mediafire.com/?cwxb1cxdx1c more than a remix, added instruments & bg vox, composed some additional parts turned a country song into a country/pop song mixed dry, no reverb. the final version would be exactly the same plus reverb. i'm too lazy to add reverb & i like dry mixes, very inyourface

I figured it out. I downloaded foobar. Interesting mix. Very Beatlesque. The drums change the feel of the song totally. Lead guitar reminds me of something off of Abbey Road. I also noticed the piano at the beginning and in a couple of other spots. Background vocals are pretty dry like you said. Thanks for giving it a whirl. It's very fun to listen to.
