Mixbus 3.2 is out.

A selection of notable changes in Mixbus v3.2 is listed below:
New Features:
• New: XT-DC Drum Character plugin added to the Character Bundle
• New: “Export Analysis” dialog may be displayed after an export The export analysis window provides these features:
LUFS loudness measurementLU (Loudness Unit) histogramLU RangeWaveform display, with peak indicatorsPeak Sample value + True Peak valueSpectrogram view

These tools provide you an extra level of confidence that your track sounds great and meets common deliverable requirements for distribution and broadcast.

Windows:

• Fixed some problems with Harrison LV2 plugin "license" text
• PortAudio now combines both modes of PortAudio into a single selection. If your system worked best with PortAudio (no callback), you will need to check the “Buffered I/O" button in the Audio setup window.
• Fix hang at exit, after exporting, when using PortAudio nonblocking audio system
• Fix OSC remote-control
• Improve support for post - export command
• Fill some more VST transport flags. (fixes some VST instruments/sequencer plugins that can be synced to the Mixbus transport)
• Prevent crash if VST does not implement effEditGetRect
• Implement MIDI device enumeration and latency offset/calibration in portaudio backend

Mac OSX:

When closing a dialog, return focus to the main window; (fixes problems where Spacebar doesn't work after closing the Export dialog, for example)

General improvements and fixes:

• New: Window > License manager: shows the status of Mixbus and LV2 plugins that use the new specification (such as x42). Show the License Manager if session contains unlicensed Harrison (or x42) LV2 plugins
• Improved the tap-tempo button accuracy … tap several times to get a more accurate bpm
• Inline channelstrip plugin parameter sliders now implement “touch” so you can write touch automation from those controls
• Fixed the problem where MIDI bindings to a knob would stop working after you moved the GUI knob
• Fix waveform flickering during recording
• Allow user to remove the timespan name from the export-filename
• “Collect Groups" feature was not doing anything. This is fixed.
• Using "Esc" key closes several dialogs that it wasn’t working on before.
• Configurable export preroll : pre-process silence before export to flush reverb tails etc. (fixes reverb tails from getting into the start of the export, if the associated plugin does not respond to flush)

..and about 100 other improvements and bug-fixes

EZKeys still crashes, but I like that export analysis thing.

Won't be able to play with any of it until the weekend.

Does it not crash on close after an export?

That has been fixed. (crash on close after export)
Other than the EZKeys thing Mixbus is pretty awesome really.
I wonder how well Toontrack supports daws like Mixbus and Tracktion. It could be their fault I guess.

Excuse me, guys... I'm curious why I would want to go outside Sonar to mixbus... I've seen it talked about forever but always mix in sonar with lots of plugs (izo, ff, ik bundles)...

So from a sonar users vantage point... where would mixbus come in and why... thanks!

Mixbus is based on their newer digital consoles that carried over the sound of the earlier Harrison analog consoles. So Mixbus is a form of getting the Harrison console sound and it is rather sweet for sure.

At this point I could be right in saying mixing stems in Mixbus might get you a sound that not many other DAW's can rival.  But then again Studio One has introduced the Console Shaper and while not an exact copy of the Mixbus sound it essentially removes the existing audio engine and replaces it with another.  Other third party people may eventually turn out console shaper plugs that may rival Mixbus but the jury is still out on that one. It does sound rather good though but right now I suspect Mixbus still has a sound of its own.

It depends on the genre of music as to whether it is well worth the improvement though.
I have experienced a situation where the Mixbus sound was worse than Studio One's.  Not often though.  It has got a lovely sweet Harrison sound to it with its EQ, dynamics and tape saturation.

Imagine getting your music to the point of mixing and going down the road to a studio fitted with a Harrison console and doing your final mix on that. Can’t be bad!  I have taught in an audio school that had a Harrison console, the same model that mixed Thriller and it did sound rather sweet for sure.  Mixbus reminds me of it all the time.  I think there is something in it for sure.

I started mastering in Mixbus and it can do that rather nicely too. eg stereo final mixes on one track.  But these days I am exporting a few stems and getting them in there too.  They have some rather nice mastering plug-ins too. (The multiband compressor being one of them)

Hey, thanks Jeff!  really appreciate the info...
Never really export to stems as I do it all myself
Well, I see google references a trial so I guess the only way to see is take a finished song I really like and try it at some point, maybe when they have a crazy sale...

Re: Mixbus 3.2 is out. 2016/03/13 04:31:55 (permalink)
Yeah I don't use it all the time. I am working on a Children's CD right now and doing everything ITB with Studio One and it is sounding nice. But talking about this has made me think maybe mastering this album in it might be the right choice actually. I mastered a real nice modern Jazz CD in 2014 and it sounded stellar. Won an award actually.

It is relatively easy to get all your fave plugins working with it as well. I have just handpicked a few mastering plugs and created a new folder and duplicated the DLL files in there. It is a simple matter to get Mixbus to scan only in that folder and just put the plug-ins you want on line to Mixbus.

Love the way Presonus Faderport works with it too. I have got one and use it with Studio One of course but Mixbus have made it compatible with it too. It is cool in that you can program in most cases what you want the Faderport switches to do which is rather cool. Fader and transport work normally of course.

I have been on 3.2 for the short time and it seems to be very nice and behaving rather well.  It has improved bigtime since it first came out.  I would class it as very stable right now on my system anyway.

It does get ridiculous at times... I have soooo many mixing/mastering tools, all of Fabs/Izotops/IK's and more... and... well... I've been reflecting more and more these days... already got the equivalent of a billion dollar studio!!!

only thing lately is the BlackHole... just F'n amazing on guitar for that floydish slide ambience... but only after I tried it and concluded this is unique and at 75% off, yowza!

If you haven't downloaded the Mixbus 3 manual or you did a while ago, it is worth downloading it again as they have updated it.  The latest one is dated more recently than the previous V3 manual.  (check: the date is on the first page)

I am not sure just installing the latest version gets you the latest download manual.  It may want to go to the online manual when you ask for it.  Which is the latest version of course.

So far this latest release looks very good and is very stable for me.

Agreed on the stability.

Just a couple of niggles for me.

1. EXKeys crashes 64bit but not 32bit (I only installed 32bit to test this). Harrison is now aware of this bug.
2. The only Slate plugs that work in MB3.2 are the standalone (FG-X, VTM, VCC & VCB). Nothing in the VMR passes through the fx (signal just passes through untouched).

Suddenly I'm having issues with Mixbus. If I load a plugin and do anything to it, the program just crashes. I have to admit that I've not really used plugins before this, so I don't know how long it's been an issue. So far nothing else has acted up. I'm on the latest 3.2 update. I miss the Sonar roll-back option right now.

If you saved all the install files (which I did) all you have to do is install that version. It's very quick.

By the way have you seen this thread in the Harrison forum?

Kind of shows that nearly every one of my plugs work in 3.2. The only plug that I can make 3.2 crash with is EZKeys in the 64bit version. Funny enough, the 32bit version of 3.2 and EZKeys runs. Sadly, Mixbus does not (yet) bridge 32bit apps into the 64bit product.

You might just have some system specific thing going on John.

John,

If you need any previous installer, let me know. As you know it's the license file(s) that should not be shared.

Thanks Ed, I have no doubt that it's an issue on my end. I've had such good luck over time that I'm not used to things glitching. My whole system is 64 bit and even the Mixbus provided plugs can cause a crash. I'm going to roll back to an earlier windows release as see if that fixes it. I know there's been 1 Win 10 cumulative update after I installed 3.2.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Found it, flicked it, fixed it.

Thanks for the tip, it seemed to have fixed my plugin issues. I'm using the Harrison tone wheel organ and it's pretty good at getting some nice tones. Check out the help button for hidden instructions.
