Mixdown old school style

Greetings!
Is there a way I can premix just by moving faders, solo's, mute etc, just to hear different ways  the song could take without having to commit to things and then export? Can I send the master to a couple tracks and record my mixing live just to hear how it may sound or do I need a whole other program to do this?

To do the old school mix moves you'll need a decent control surface and something to mixdown to.

Didn't feel like writing all my moves in the program just to hear a quick mix.

You don't need to write them then, you can do a real time bounce handling the sliders as you go.

Yeah, been trying to do that and every time I do it, it locks off any movement of faders or buttons.

Do you have Record Automation enabled? That and any previous volume control commands or movements, possibly midi, could be kidnapping your moves. I know this response sounds rather silly if you are an experienced user but I have shot myself in the foot many times by overlooking the simplest of reasons something is not working.

Old school mixing without export / committing to tape is what we have now.

If you want to commit to tape and try different mixes that way, then of course you need something outboard like a dat or reel to reel to capture.

There are programs that will record from one to another to stay ITB. Reaper is one that can be configured to capture the sound of another program using Direct Sound. There may be another way, but that is the only way I have made work.

Like others have mentioned - if you just want to hear different mixes, then create and save the mix files with different version names.

I would like it if sonar had a way to save several mix layouts or whatever they would be best named, but you can have more than one sonar project opened at a time, so there is a way to be able to a/b different version names of a mix fairly quickly right now.

A simple solution would be to use copies of the project.

Just get the project done, do not include any envelopes and save it with the SAVE AS command. Then add envelopes to the new project....SAVE AS ...and repeat as often as you need to.

The downside is the hard drive space it eats up with audio based projects..... but, just delete the unneeded ones once you have the mix you want.

I, on the other hand insert my envelopes manually and make my envelope edits manually as well.  Changing the mix of the instruments and levels is so easy to do...as opposed to riding the faders with a mouse. I stopped using the record automation function long, long ago. It was so difficult to edit quickly.

My edits now consist of sets of 4 manually inserted nodes.

by doing it this way, I can easily change the mix in a matter of a few seconds.  In the pic, you can see that I'm using piano fills from piano take 2 & 3 but I can easily pull them down and raise the piano take 1 ....where the nodes are pretty much in the same approximate locations for a quick swap on the fills. In the pic above, the piano fill in M17/18 is actually a combination of the fills from 2 different parts using surgical editing done manually.

Also for the OP - you could mix your whole project with a bounce to tracks within your project for different experimenting. Just solo the new track...

I still like the save-as option the best.

If you want to go really old school you can connect your V-Studio outputs to a tape machine and mix real time like it was 1985.

As much as I love digital and automation and all that stuff, I do miss being able to do a quick dub without a lot of hassles.  I may take a feed from the V-Studio output to the inputs of my little laptop and use it as a virtual tape machine for quick mixes.

By the way, the V-Studio 700 is an awesome solution.  For the price, features, quality, and integration, I do not know of anything else close.

DahJah,  You can take the main stereo output from your VS700 to the input of anything you want to use as a mixdown deck. Anything will work as a mixdown deck, VCR, Cassette player, Dat or even a Stereo track back into Sonar. I like mixing into an Alesis Masterlink, when I mix out-of-the-box.
