Mixdown problems
I'm hoping someone can help me with my 'mixdown' problem. I've finished working on a song and then want to save the whole thing as a wave file for exporting to a CD. I'm using MC3 and this is the first song I've completed using this package. I click on 'File', 'Export', 'Audio' and complete the detail in the 'Export Audio' dialog box in order to export the entire mix. MC3 goes through the motions and creates a wave file but when I try to play it, there's no sound (although the level meters indicate that something is playing). Does anyone have any suggestions? Samhas (Greetings from Oz )

This problem is most likely caused by incorrect settings for mixdown for playing on a CD player. CD readers (and windows media, iTunes, etc) all play files that are created in 16 bit, 44.1kHz sampling only. change your settings when you mixdown to those settings and it will play.

Sounds like something is turned off in the sound cards applet window, since the meters read the file and nothing sounds.

First go to the edit dropdown, and pick "select all", everything should get shaded darker, then export as usual.

Please verify what we are all assuming that your tracks are audio and not MIDI. Is that correct?

Firstly, thanks for your help guys. Beagle - I know it's set at 16-bit but I'll have to check re: 44.1 kHz. Robo - I don't think this is the problem but I'll check. I still have MC2 installed on my system and I don't experience any problems 'mixing down'. Gamblerschoice - I've been doing 'CTRL + A' to select all so this probably isn't the problem. millerbill - All tracks are definitely audio (I probably should have mentioned this earlier). Anyhow, I'm at work at the moment, but will check out a few things when I get home. Samhas

Try importing the file back into MC and see if it plays there, then try open it in a wave editor like goldwave or audacity, and check that try to find out just what you exported. find out exactly what the properties of the file are. There has to be some silly little issue here if the meters move there is wave file, and if there is no sound then something is either turned off or not attached.

As mentioned in my last post, I went home yesterday and tried a few things. I had a success straight away (without actually changing anything from the day before!) and I thought I'd overcome the problem --- I could export MC3 files to a wave file and play it on a wave player. Then I tried it again with another song and it didn't work. Also, the original wave that I had working okay didn't work any longer. So I tried opening the exported wave file in MC3 (as suggested by Robo) and it worked fine but it didn't work if I opened it in Audacity. So I fiddled around for an hour or so, tyring different settings and software and still the same problem --- the MC3 files would seem to export to a wave file okay and the indicators in my wave player said that the wave file was playing, but I had no sound. In frustration, I closed MC3 and then, as a last desperate act, I double-clicked on one of the exported wave files and it began playing with sound !!! All the other exported wave files worked okay too. It seems that having MC3 open somehow prevented the wave files from playing --- presumably some type of software/hardware conflict! While it might be a bit of a pain having to close MC3 to play an exported wave file, I can live with that. I guess I'd better check to see if other (non-MC3 related wave files) play when I have MC3 open! Thanks for your help guys. Samhas

While I'd resigned myself to closing MC3 whenever I wanted to play the mixed down wave files, I thought Beagle's idea was the obvious solution. Unfortunately, it wasn't! I did what Beagle said and it made no difference (this is not meant as a criticism of Beagle because his idea is pretty logical). Any wave files I'd created with MC3 would not play in a wave player until I closed down MC3. I also tried playing other wave files that had nothing to do with MC3 and I experienced the same problem. So I'd say that the problem is some sort of resource issue where MC3 won't allow the use of drivers (?) by other software. I'm happy enough to continue on with this incovenience, however, if anyone has any further brilliant suggestions, they'd be appreciated. Samhas

Sorry, Samhas, if that didn't fix it, then I don't know what else will.
