Mixed metaphors
Or should that be "mixed-up" metaphors? I just heard a song with the line "Like a jet plane landing, the pain is overwhelming." Um, ok. So, did this plane land on you or what? They don't call a crash a landing so that's not it... I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm failing to see how a jet plane landing can cause overwhelming pain (unless, perhaps, some guy's mother-in-law was on that plane coming for a visit?). That said, maybe we can come up with some good ones on our own? Ya? Not intentional mash-ups like "That guy upstairs is sharp as a marble!" but more along the lines of "Like putting jam on a roll, my feet kept getting colder!" So, got any interesting ones? It might be fun to make a song out of some of them eventually...

I'm going to have to chew on the biscuit a little in order to get my head round this hurdle.

So what you are proposing is like a game of Ker-Plunk where if you pull out the wrong stick everything goes up in smoke?

I think I'm warming to the idea now, much like a salmon in the moulting season.

That is a long, long way to go just for a rhyme. Having said that, I like the in-law idea. It could also be a loved one leaving, a la By The Time I Get To Phoenix or Leaving On A Jet Plane. Are you looking for bad metaphors in songs, idioms, or completely original phrases?

Sure! I just thought the lyric was interesting yet completely nonsensical. The Bouy is on the right train to getting his bangers and mash.

Like a water color in the rain, I knew just what to say when I caught her cheating. My car didn't start because the dairy had sold their last cow. The boys on the team made a bet but Laura still wore the costume her Mom made for her in the play. (Just about any lyric from a Bush song.)

Eight miles high and when you touch down Like a jet plane landing, You'll find it's unsettling Signs in the street that say where you're going Are somewhere, the pain is overwhelming Nowhere is there warmth to be found Among those INLAWS coming to your town Rain gray town known for its moulting season In places small faces unbound without reason .... Round the squares huddled in storms Some laughing some Loving Gentle Caress Sidewalk scenes and black limousines Some driving, some crashing headlong through the wall

You just reminded me of 'Arthur' who used to be a footie commentator on Wiltshire Radio..he'd some out with some classics like; 'They're going through the Swindon defence like...like a knife through a tin-opener!' 'He thought he was going to pass the ball, but that was just a grey heron' 'Must be nearly full-time..the ref's looking at his whistle'

Ah, poor Sid. NOT a very good dart player himself, but so passionate of the game (or maybe just passionate with Phil Taylor?). Too bad he's no longer around. He was a member of a forum where I'm a senior admin and I've had a few chin wags with prior world champions about him (they would sometimes stay at my house when they were in the Pacific Northwest area of the U.S.). In American Baseball we had an announcer that could produce similar lines as your footie announcer. Jerry Coleman. Another who passed away recently... Then there's Yogi Berra. Some of his lines are legendary.

Not necessarily a mixed metaphor, but a missed metaphor that always bugs me when I hear L.S. "Free Bird": "This bird you cannot change". Cries out to be: "This bird you cannot cage". It even fits poetically.
