Mixer Control Surface Question

Ok I have a question.

After some research, I found that I won't need to buy an analog mixer to use with a DAW, since all most mixers only have a stereo output. If I had wanted to record separate tracks in Sonar then I will need an audio interface with the appropriate number of inputs. Saves me money from having to buy a separate mixer. The Yamaha I have rarely sees any use as it is except perhaps for occasional laptop use.

So, what are some recommendations for a good audio interface? I read about the Tascam 1800, seems decent. Budget up to $500. Though I do have the 1616m, I would need a few additional mic inputs for my friend's quartet recordings without having to use an XLR-TS adapter. And of course if Sonar sees it then I can control all of the inputs using the mixer within Sonar. However, I do know that the faders themselves can be controlled with a mouse, but are there some good control surfaces that can control the faders within Sonar? Otherwise, may have to use a good trackball mouse for fader control.

Thanks for any help.

Well you could go with something like the V700(but I guess not due to budget). Made with Sonar in mind. At the other end of the spectrum are the Behringer units that offer a tactile control through midi . Several here use those combination M-audio interface/control surfaces Tascam also has one.

It is no problem to get an audio interface with at least 8 inputs and then augment it with an outboard control surface like Those made by Mackie, behringer and others. In other words, they don't have to be joined together.

    AV,

you are simply interested in a new interface for recording your friend's quartet, right?  Not a control surface or somekind of combo mixer/interface.

Beagle has a listing of interfaces on his site.  Do a search for him.  My personal recommendation at that price is the TC Konnekt Twin, tho for a quartet you would need a couple of preamps.  So one of the others Beagle lists might be a better deal.

Yes, I am interested in a new audio interface as well, sorry if my post seemed hard to follow...sometimes I have a challenge getting things worded correctly to where it makes sense.

I was also interested in a control surface too since I want to compose my own music. I suppose I can just use a trackball mouse to control the faders and such and with a $500 budget, if it necessitates going a bit higher i'll just have to save up for it.

I did try looking up Beagle's info on his site but it seems down as I couldn't bring up the page. I'll have to try it again.

A trackball would do that for sure. Those Behringer units are decent for the money and I don't usually recommend anything Behringer....... for a lot of functions other than faders keystrokes shortcuts can save a lot of the hassle of editing and moving around in Sonar.
