Mixer settings recall

I've been a Samplitude user over the years in my little home project studio but it was giving me problems with my mobile rig so I demoed and switched to Sonar 6.0.

I'm in a band and want to record our gig's live. I have 16 direct outs on my Allen&Heath mixer and I have 16 ports of Firewire (adat) input to my laptop. I set up a template that lets my open a new project and quickly begin tracking a set of our gig.

I got home and wanted to start mixing these 16 raw tracks. I inserted a fair amount of gates/reverb/compression/ and panned tracks to my liking. Everything is cool!

Now, I open the next set from one of the nights I recorded, and I'd like to just import the mixer setting from the previously edited set. I'm thinking this should be easy (it is in Samplitude) but I'm not having luck.

Can someone give me a pointer as to what might save my mixer settings such that I could apply them to various other set's of live gig's I've recorded? I'm an admitted newbie so be gentle.

You can save the first one as a template

In Sonar the Track View is where the action is. The mixer(called Console View) is an afterthought sort of. It is really only for those that are used to that way of working.

Having said that, one way to do what you want is create a template from the project you just had. Deleting any data i.e. audio and MIDI. Another way is use track templates with the plugins and setting it the way you want. These will need to be loaded before you load or import you audio.

One way I do things is have a project that is called empty except for my bus setup. This is in its own folder because I have per project folders on as an option. When I use the project I will save it with a rename and to another folder.

If you have more questions please ask.

    John & CJay,

Thanks for the replies. So I'll delete the audio from the first set I completed and save it as a template. If I follow this right, then I'll open a new project and import the audio from the another set I recorded. I'll see if importing the audio is easier then just replicating my setting.

Also, I'll try to work more in the track menu if that is how Sonar is best utilized.

    Thanks,

You can open both projects, select all clips and drag them over to the new empty project (created from your new template) in one swoop - or copy/paste, which will give you more options about what to copy. Should work as long as the track order is the same in both. HTH

I don't understand John's comment about the console view being an afterthought. Imho it comes down to personal taste, which you prefer to work in for mixing.

Just a follow-up to let everyone know that it saving a blank template and importing the data back into the project worked great. Thanks everyone!!!

I agree on the fact that the console view is not an afterthought (for me of course).

After tracking, I do most of my mixing there, it gives instant sight on everything going on the plugins/routings/metering side.

I don't think you guys understood what John meant with the "afterthought" comment. Just think about where you do most of your work as far as waveform editing, track and clip automation, MIDI settings, waveform editing (this one counts for two ), etc. I only use the console view for leveling my tracks and maybe a few other things but everything can be done in track view without ever going to the console view. The contrary cannot be done in the console view. This is probably what he meant.

I love the console view, but I agree, most of your time is spent in the track view creating your project. Endless hours goes into tracking, sculpting, creating envelopes and automation. Pitch shifting, editing, using midi and all that goes into creation process. After all of that is completed, then and only then do we focus on the Console view and the mixing aspect of the song.

But a guy like me uses three monitors, so my console view is always up and I am always looking at my levels on the console screen.

    Peace
(Where is my Sonar 7 DVD!)
