Mixing Advise on an old school song I'm working on
I'm working on a song in a genre I'm not used to. I need opinions on the mix and changes needed. (The mixing is done by another person, I did the music) - http://www.2dadventure.com/stuff/songs/aage%20bhi%209-6-12.mp3 Also advise on any changes in the arrangement if you feel so. P.S. Does anyone think attaching a compressor to the bass side chained to the kick is required? Sometimes I felt the bass was too boomy..

interesting intro The female singer sounds like she's singing through cotton a bit not enough highs and "air" around her vox.... not as present and clear as she should be considering the clarity of the music. I'm thinking too that her vox could come up a db or two... but if you get the EQ fixed (on the vocals) that might be all that it needs. everything else sounds good to me. cool tune and creative production..... I'm not a big fan of the thunder....

Thanks for the tips Guitarhacker. I too felt the vocals were too low, will ask the engineer to try eq then volume. Thunder is based on the lyrics as the girl is asking 'whats that sound' 'looks like there going to be a storm' etc. Neole

this is fine... I hear nothing wrong with the vocal eq... very interesting music especially during the breakdown... I'm hearing some scales I'm not used to... what language?

This song sounds terrific in my humble little studio. I thought all things were balanced well, and I especially love the many textures that occur during this tune. The sound of the guitar playing bluesy licks over this somewhat ethnic pop song put this over the top. This is very creative and challenging. I, for one, like sound effects if they're in context with the song, and these work for me. Oh yeah, and the vocal was very good. This is a new taste for me, and I like it.

Oh I should mention the singer is a malaysian who does not speak or understand indian. She just learnt the lines and sang them. Neole

Very cool song. There is a lot of changes and other textures in this song that make it very interesting to listen to. The vocals which are sung provide a nice haunting contrast to the pop-like sound of the rhythm/instruments. The mix sounds great.

I've listened to quite a bit of Indian music - Shankar ragas,meditation pieces and even some Bollywood so I was familiar with the sound of this. It's good. And yes, the bass is a little boomy.

Nice work....mix didn't bug me at all. I listened on the A and B speakers in the studio and then again on consumer speakers in an untreated space and I didn't pick up on any bass boom or vocal EQ/level problems.
*shrug* Different ears + different spaces = different outcomes, but I think it sounds great.
