Mixing Affected & Unaffected Send/Return Effects Separately

Could someone please explain to me how to use the send/return effects? I know you could have a reverb for example with multiple instruments going to the same reverb. I'm just not sure how to mix both the affected and unaffected sound separately. Will this affect all the signals going through it or can you adjust each one separately?

    complex,
    look into 'buss FX'

try setting up sub-busses, and routing your sends to a bus setup for, delay, or one setup for reverb....

you can set them up for mono, or stereo..

for example, sometimes i like a short reverb with predelay, for putting on rhythm guitars..
and i'll send some reverb out to the 'short slap reverb' buss, and then pan the dry track hard left, and pan the reverb effect by itself, hard right

it's endless how you can setup routing

I often use a Stereo Buss and throw my FX ....verb and other stuff into it. I then route the similar tracks.....say for example, acoustic guitars or vocals all into that one buss to be effected by that one reverb.

Much of the music I have on my website incorporates that concept. It works well.

On the other hand, there is no problem placing the FX directly into the track FX bin either. I use this when I only have one track that needs the FX in it.

Like Bat said, there are many ways to accomplish that. I try my best to keep it as simple as possible.

When you want to add a send,

Right click on the Send for the track you are messing with,

It should create a seperate Bus for you

On the Bus, Insert your (lets say) Reverb and adjust as needed,

REMOVE all the DRY signals so its just WET

If there are other tracks that will use the same settings on that effect, you can right click on the send section for that track and you will see the option to send it to your new FX Bus.

On each track in the send portion you have adjustments for the amount of volume for that track being sent to the FX bus

I like to solo the FX bus once I have multiple track sent to it to adjust each tracks send volume as needed so one doesnt over power others.

Once thats done, un-solo and you can adjust the amount of the Effect from the FX bus without effecting the volume of the tracks.

This is kinda the way I use it

You will just have to experiment and find what works for your methods.

In theory when you mix to a reverb bus the general rule is to take away the dry part of the send effect and only use the wet portion. This is because you only want to hear the wet sound in that channel.

Subjectively all rules are out the window but this is how it is generally done. When I record in 24 bit there is more headroom. The cumulative effect of multiple feed into a buss can overload it if you don't watch your levels. The levels may need to be lower depending on how much of the signal you are sending it.
