Mixing board options

Hey all,
Need some help on a preferred 16ch or 24ch mixing board that will work well with Sonar. I have heard many stories about people who buy off brand mixers and can't get it to work with Sonar at all, so I want to avoid that situation.

Price range - I really don't want to go above $2500 if I can avoid it.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

I can vouch that the Allen & Heath ZED-R16 is absolutely superb. Not sure what US pricing is like though.

I'll take a look at that one.  Also, are they difficult to hook up so they can be controlled through sonar console?

Not sure what you mean but it's 18 in & 18 out although 2 in/out are stereo pair.

The routing options are second to none. You can send tracks out of Sonar to indivdual channels on the board. Use processors on the insert, use the fantastic sounding EQ (or not) and record them back onto the same tracks within Sonar. All at 'zero' latency (direct monitoring).

It can also be used as a control surface although I don't use it for that. It's no MCU, (no motorised faders) but it's certainly better than nothing.

If you search the forums I've written several reviews and there's a huge thread over at Gearslutz.

Hooking up was as simple as plugging it in and installing the drivers.

    Thanks for the recommendation!
Just purchased one on ebay :)  Great deal!  1500$

Really excited to get it and hook it up.  Would it be ok to PM you if I have a question or 2 about setup once it arrives? I think I'll be ok, but just in case :)

Wow you don't let the grass grow under your feet. You won't regret it and if you do need more channels you can hook up another 8 channels via ADAT.

I'm sure you'll find setting it up a breeze although the routing options can make your head spin at first. Feel free to PM me if you need to.

Yeah, I wanted to jump on that purchase since it was the only one on ebay for a decent price. All of the others were 1000$ more. I read a bunch of reviews on it and it looks great.  Glad I got it.

Thanks for the help request reply.  Much appreciated.

Tried to PM you but your inbox was full :)

Well, I managed to get sound from the ZED by plugging into the CRM jack, which I was doing before, but this time I had "Studio monitor feeds 1" pressed in with AFL on. Also MIX L-R is pressed in on that same strip..which gave me sound now. Also the button above the phones jack "Dig Master to LR" is pressed also and lit green.

So, now I would like to record my instruments into different tracks into Sonar using the ZED..however, here is the part that confuses the hell out of me.  The outputs in sonar are 1/2 3/4 5/6 etc..  when selecting chan 1/2 as a track output, I can only use the 1st input on the mixing board, and the 2nd input on the board is completely ignored.

What do I have to do inside of Sonar to make it so every channel on the mixing board goes to a separate channel in Sonar?   i.e - snare drum on channel 1, hi hat channel 2, bass drum channel 3 etc etc..  Right now when selecting channel 1/2 as the output, only channel 1 works. This was also an issue on my profire2626 as well..so I'm guessing it has to be a Sonar config thing??

You seem to be way more experienced in this then I am since this is my first time ever using a mixing board..so I appreciate your input.

I'm no expert on this one but it sounds like you need to pan hard left and right to access your indvidual channels, for instance you want channel one to go into Sonar, so long as you can see the input, select channel one.  On the mixing board pan channel 1 hard right and channel two hard left.

This is how most mixing boards work when you are bussing and I suspect it is the same when outputing to Sonar.

Correct me if I am wrong FBB, I hope this works for you.

    Peace

kjs003333 I've only just seen this thread again but I've now replied to your PM. For anyone else who may find this thread the ZEDs channels both in & out are listed within Sonar as 8 stereo pairs ZED 1/2 Left, ZED 1/2 Right, & ZED 1/2 Stereo plus the ZED MAINS

    ZED 1/2 Left = Channel 1
    ZED 1/2 Right = Channel 2
ZED 1/2 Stereo = Channels 1 & 2 as a stereo pair and that's when you'd pan Channel 1 hard left and Channel 2 hard right to get the full stereo width.

When using the individual channels you can have pan centred.
