Mixing desk?

Hi,

I was wondering if a mixing desk is essential or at all necessary for a software based home studio (hence Project 5 forum), where I am not using any live instrumentation or audio. Most studios nowadays usually involve a mixing desk somewhere along the line, so any feedback about the importance of a mixing desk would be great.

Thank you very much.

If you don't use anything but softsynths, P5 has it's own mixing functions to control the volumes/effects on each synth. Really an external mixer like that is to control the sound coming from or going to other external hardware like effects or instruments. Hope that helps.

P5 is among a handful of workflow models that don't have virtual mixing boards

Tracktion is an audio host that also supports mixing/mastering within the tracks

it all depends on one's habits and expectations

There are ways to use Sonar's virtual mixing desk to mix/master P5's tracks

Jan, I think he is referring to an outboard mixer, rather than a virtual one...

Since you aren't using any live instrumentation or audio at this time, why worry?
Having said that, if in the future you decide to implement audio and/or instrumentation, a mixer along with a good audio interface (among other things) can only help. A lot depends on your budget and overall Musical goals. The Great thing about Project 5 is that anyone can start small.
