Mock up scenario : linking 2 or more X1 daw

I'll will probably never use more than 4 - 6 input at once (2 or 3 midi-ed keyboards on stereo), and my Alesis Firewire 16 is more than enough for my usage.

But I'm just imagining if I have to record many more channels live, than my audio interface could provide, would it be possible to link 2 or more X1 daws (master/slave midi) with additional (and possibly mixing different brands of) audio interface ?

..with additional X1 license of course :)

Have anyone done this ?

If all you want to do is record the Midi data then you can plug in as many midi interfaces as you need.

If you're recording the audio from the midi keyboards then the standard method is to ensure your interface has enough inputs to match your requirements. For example, the PreSonus Firestudio I use can handle 24 analogue inputs (with adat extenders) and the driver supports chaining 2 of these together, so I could record upto 48 chanels (if I had the money...)

Slaving two or more seperate audio interfaces in ASIO mode is impossible. ASIO doesn't support it.

Running 2 independent systems, linked by MMC would theoretically be possible, but they MUST share a common word clock for the audio interface to ensure the data rate on both machines is exactly the same.   DAWs normally take their timing clock from the interface (or external clock) and no 2 pieces of electronics will run at exactly the same speed, unless they're liked.  You'd find that transfering recorded tracks from one machine to the other for mixing that they gradually drift out of time with each other.

    Karyn,

I was referring to recording audio inputs.

Thanks for pointing out the clock and track drifting issues. I always thought it's possible to line up the audio tracks recorded on different hardware..perhaps only for very short recording.
