Modern Jazz - Mike's Bag

http://bit.ly/YCjRkL
This isn't a final mix, but it isn't that far off.  This was written as a tribute to the late great titan of tenor saxophone, Michael Brecker, as well as my friend who plays tenor, Mike Bagasao.  Hence the title, "Mike's Bag".  I think that Mike turned in the performance of a lifetime on this.

The rest of the players are James Lownes - bass, David "Fingers" Haynes - drum programming, Ray Ferretti - guitar, Jonas Aras - piano.

Any and all comments welcome.

Jonas

Michael Brecker would have been impressed with this piece, as would Charlie Parker and a handful of other great sax players.  It's great to hear music like this for an old timer like me.  Thank you, Jonas, for carrying on the tradition.  It sounds fine as is.  Bravo, maestro.

It was a long song......but I enjoyed every minute of it. The composition is good and it sounds like the mix is coming along great.

Impressive.  Damn fine work, all of it.  I like the mix too, I mean.. who wouldn't?  I like this a lot, we don't get a lot jazz here.  I do a little, but mostly smooth stuff and old standards, but this is refreshing.  Well done, love it!  I'm a fan.

I know I'm resurrecting the dead, but this song has been reworked quite a bit.  The guitar parts  have been completely redone and I think that the overall effect is much better as a result.  I changed the link at the top of the thread.

    Thanks,
    J

I love jazz! All jazz. I'm transribing Louis Armstrong's intro to West End Blues right now. Mike's bag is my break time . Wonderful blowing by everyone on this. I just love it!

Like I said on your other song, I know even less about Jazz than I do Country (like damn near squat), but I am impressed by the complexity of what I am hearing. It is hard to say if it the MP3 encoding, but it is a tad less clear and dynamic than I would expect from the style and instruments used. Not a lot, but it could use some twinkle if you know what I mean.

@ bayoubill: I've transcribed plenty, but my interests never went that far back.  I am a Hank Jones nut, however.  I don't know if you can hear his influence on my piano playing in this context, but it's certainly there in my heart and head.

@ foxwolfen: As I am firmly middle-aged I find myself gravitating more and more towards a "warm chocolate" sound and less twinkly.  One thing that the MP3 doesn't have that the final mastered version will have is a low cut.  The compensating effect will hopefully make it just right.
