Monitoring While Recording Vocals Question

It has been said that monitors must be disconnected in order to monitor via headphones while recording vocals. Can this be true? If not, how do we get around the problem. Thanks.

I've got a pair of outputs in my interface routed to my channel strip so I can have zero latency monitoring through my headphones when I later tracks down. Then I just turn the monitors down on the mixer.
