Mooch's Daily Marathon Training Week 6 Friday

I am running (walking kinda briskly) The Chicago Marathon on October 9, 2011. I have been training for 6 weeks now in an 18 week training program. Myself, and a friend from my church are doing it.

We are doing for personal goals as well as to raise money for Alzheimers research. I am part of the ALZ Stars... and need to raise $1000 my October 9th.

I am slow. I am fat. I can walk a mile in 22-23 minutes. However, at the moment I am jogging them at a 16:30 pace.

I have a cool Garmin watch that is hooks up to a satellite and maps where I am going. My speed. You can then look at the maps online and your speed, calories burned. I am also wired to a heart rate monitor.

I am hoping to do 15 minute miles and finish in 6 hours 30 minutes by doing the run/walk method.

Last October I weighed 247 pounds and now I am at 207. I think when Bapu was here in May I was hovering around 225.

anyway my goal is 160 by the jan 2012 .

This watch is fairly new – but you can look at the map and times and progress on this page if you wish.....

I'll post daily to keep you all amused and for my own motivation.

I'm confused...  Are you in potty retraining or something?  And what does this have to do with Bapu's post count???

Just another ploy by Mooch to get me to say something obtuse.

Not gonna do it.

Great Job Mooch!

18 weeks sounds like a short time to prepare for a full marathon.

It will be a massive achievement if you pull it off.

Good luck and have fun.

Way to go, Paul.

I'm honored that you actually want all of us here to know your exact whereabouts for the next few months.  :)

He's doing it to help cure Alzheimers Janet.  He wants everyone to be able to remember their own whereabouts down the road as well!

Mooch - Be sure to talk to the people at a vitamin place (like Vitamin World).  There are some things you can do before, during and after the race that will help you survive and recover MUCH (MOOCH?) better than you would normally.  My favorite for afterwards is l-glutamine (a powder that, like many of my jokes, is tasteless).  It helps to get rid of the lactic acid in your muscles so they don't hurt.

Re:Mooch's Daily Marathon Training Week 6 Friday 2011/07/17 13:02:29 (permalink)
good for you Mooch:

for your weight, and amount of time you have been training, 16:30 a mile is not bad at all.

the most important thing you can do, as you already know, is get that weight down as much as you can;

Stretching before and after the jog is also very important. You should stretch 20-30 minutes to avoid injuries. Soooooo many people skip on the stretching.

Running with a group is so much more enjoyable than jogging by yourself.

Back to the weight: it's probably the single most important thing you can do to run a marathon. I have been an avid jogger for 30 years; but I have only run two marathons; I weigh 225 (I am very tall and the weight is distributed well) but still running 26 miles is too much for me.

So..... if you get your weight around 175 or so, there's no reason you can't accomplish your goal.

Train slow, stretch before and after running, lose as much weight as you can and a 5 hour marathon is VERY doable.

GOOD LUCK
