ORIGINAL: Anderton ORIGINAL: Nick P IMO the best Minimoog clone is the GMedia Minimonsta. To my ears it beats the Arturia. I think your ears are correct, the Minimonsta has a bit more of the "bite" that some Minimoogs exhibited. I also really like the Creamware emulation; it's kind of old at this point, but it sounds a whole lot like my Mini. I'll have to try the Minionsta demo some time, although I've already bought the whole Arturia V Collection. I guess I was sucked in by the fact that Bob Moog put his name on the Arturia products. Then again, people tend to think things sound better when they can save $50, so who knows.

I would like to ask a favor...I'm trying to determine if there is a pattern to people's favorite patches. For example, there have been lots of favorable comments about the "analog" sounds, but I expected the sequenced patches would go over the best. Or maybe it's just particular patches that really tweak people. If you have any particular favorite patches from the Minimoog Tribute set, knowing what they are would help me a lot in planning my next expansion pack (which will be based on an entirely different, and fairly large, sample set). Do you want pads? Basses? Sequences? All of the above? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Craig- The sequences are by far the best part of the collection, IMO - but all of the sounds are great. In particular -"Life in Motion", "Sounds of Industry" and "DanceSeq" are all especially wonderful. For the non-sequenced sounds, all of the Winds are exceptional. Cheers, and looking forward to the next set!

That's very helpful feedback. Just to sort of give a teaser, the set I'm working on right now is all about Electronic Guitar. In the same spirit as the Minimoog Tribute, although some sounds are immediately identifiable as guitar, I use Rapture to really mutate things. I'm finding that doing step sequencing on sustaining power chords can give some great effects, so if people like the step sequencing patches on Minimoog Tribute, you can bet I'll have a lot of sequenced patches in Electronic Guitar. I'm also using axes like the Roland VG to give very unusual guitar sounds, even without the Rapture processing.

Love the e-pianos and all those buttery organs - they're of incredible quality. Perfect deep house sounds.
You're in an amazing state. So stay there.

Thanks for the feedback! I was very surprised by the piano sounds, actually. I was trying to create something else and this piano sound just kinda happened when I tweaked the "wrong" parameters. The secret to the pipe organ sound is layering sounds at multiple octaves. But I also think the Moog waveforms have something to do with that "buttery" sound you mention. They seem smoother than just sampling an organ.

I forgot to mention...there are some "Easter eggs" in there, in the sense that for some patches, elements are turned off because they didn't contribute to a specific patch but make interesting noises nonetheless. I don't have a specific list of patches that do this, but the QC folks at Cakewalk found 'em and wanted to know what the deal was.

Hey Craig, I just wanted to let you know that I downloaded the expansion pack this weekend, and I had a lot of fun playing with it. My favorites were the sequences. I had a lot of fun creating variations on what you did by inverting or mirroring the steps. Then I opened up two versions of Rapture and played around with different sequences bouncing off each other. That and a drum loop, and I was entertained (and taken to outer space...) for hours. I also replaced some of the waveforms in your patches, and was happy to see that your programming gives a lot of nice starting points. Oh, and I noticed that some of the patches also have step sequences programmed but turned off. I played with turning those off and on, and came up with some fun stuff that way too. Seeing some of your programming remnants like that was very interesting. I will have to investigate the "turned off elements" next. I'll being looking for any new packs you develop. Doc DROP

Cakewalk, what about a discount (e.g. on a choosable expansion pack from your store) for all Leopard users waiting since months to use their Rapture? As a let's say compensation for not being able to use it properly...

You're very welcome, Craig. Yeah, playing inverted and mirrored sequences together (i.e. 2 instances of Rapture, although you could probably do something like it with two elements...) is a HUGE source of instant grooves! I have to say, I am kind of proud that you hadn't thought of that. I have been reading your writing for decades! I am very happy to give back a little... Doc DROP

Craig, if you are listening?... I had a question about your Moog patches. I have found that the mono leads and basses have the polyphony set to 1. I always try to have patches like that work in "legato mode". I.e., not retrigger the envelopes unless you release the previous key. To do that in Rapture you set the polyphony to 0. If not, when I play fast lines, my fat fingers often wind up cutting off notes if I hit a key in passing by accident. Also, the MiniMoog pretty much defaulted to legato mode, didn't it? I have never played a real one, so excuse my ignorance. Anyway, I was curious why you set them at 1 note polyphony? Thanks, Doc DROP

Good question...first of all, yes, the Minimoog did do legato. But I guess for these questions, it's a question of personal preference (or a different way that fat fingers work!). With bass and lead, I almost always want to have a strong attack, and in legato mode, sometimes I'll miss the attack

Ah, gotcha. What I have done to have the best of both worlds is to include an attack sound in one of the elements. I put that one at 1 polyphony. It doesn't matter if it gets cut off because it only lasts for the spike of the attack. Anything to try to slim up these fatties... I sure love Rapture. Patches are literally dropping out of it as I play. Having my Remote SL knobs, buttons and faders linked to controls makes it as close to playing a real anologue as soft synths can get. Yesterday I messed around with setting a huge pitch bend range with 100% smoothing in the midi matrix. Then I recorded myself doing some pitch bends for a wav. file that last about 30 seconds. I loaded it into a couple of elements in Rapture, transposed it up a couple of octaves, and came up with the worlds ugliest patch ever. I created a sequence playing the Rapture patch along with the original wav. file. I plan on using it the morning after my neighbors next all night party. My way of saying thanks...

Hey--I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who bought the Minimoog Tribute pack. It's doing well, and I appreciate that you're not just downloading it off of BitTorrent or something :) Anyway, I'm working away at the Electronic Guitar patch set and it should be done in time for Summer NAMM. I gotta say Rapture continues to impress me more and more, even after all these months...what a great synth. Congrats to Cakewalk for winning a MIPA for it, it's deserved.

I did the Rapture Full + Moog Pack deal last month and I'm still in bewilderment mode {after getting expansion packs, Craig's Moog pack, that patch site stuff and those crazy mellotrons} but the one patch that has stood out for me is the Brass_Analog and that sawf2 waveform. Something about that patch is so pure and the touch sensitivity and expressiveness is all there. I took the effects off the 2 elements and the global and do a little chorus with my old deltalab 1024 delay and some real spring reverb but the soul of that sample is what speaks. The expressive variations you can do with just velocity and envelopes is what I'm savoring at the moment. It sounds good in every octave and at the very very bottom it does that cool chugging seq thing all by itself. I loaded that waveform into Nanowave in Reaktor and it sounds great there, too but lacks the touchy expressive qualities of the Rapture patch. I'm not particularly bonding with any of the sequenced stuff {except doing some crazy big extreme panning sequences} but that will be another day. Thanks Craig!

do you have an ETA for this yet? I have a ton of raw material that I use every day, cryo. It may be enough to release right now, with a little refinement, but there are a couple of items that have been holding me back from doing so. For one, the Soundtower editor for the ADR III had some serious flaws for deep editing. In any kind of 'emulation', I'd like to include the original ADR III presets as a base, then layer on my custom presets over that. My current editor forces many parameters to be 'stepped through' from the hardware itself, and that's a very tedious process. I do see an update to the editor, and I'm in the process of downloading it right now. Thanks for the unintentional reminder to check this out. Secondly, I was waiting on something that will make my collection here explode with possibilities. It's that good. But without a defined ETA on that, I can't really tell you how soon afterwards I would put out my take on the enhanced capabilities.

I'm still working on the Electronic Guitar Expansion Pack...I'd hoped to have it done by now, but you know how it goes :) And yes, the AdrenaLinn is wonderful! I did an entire loop CD for M-Audio based around playing guitar through the AdrenaLinn2.
