The new moonshine grows in the soil but the old fashioned stills are still popular in this area.....every now and then they seem to bust some hapless farmer with a still in his old tobacco barn.   The show on TV about the moonshiners is filmed in a town not far from where my daughter is living in Virginia.  Those guys are buffoons though. Actors....

cool tune, and really nice job on recording those acoustics.

Really nice piece and great acoustics Bat!!  I almost get a CSN vibe from this number.  Everything from vocals-instrumentation-production really works.  Excellent job.  Hey, maybe it could be featured on that show that Herb mentioned?

Sounded great to me Bat on my Hi-Def headphones. I don't have my Truth Monitors hooked up at the present time and didn't want to listen to this thru my 5.1 stereo surround sound set up (used mostly for watching movies in 5.1 surround sound) because you most likely didn't record it that way, so it wouldn't be a true listen. Love the song and the sound of the instrumentation and the vocals sounded perfect. Another great piece from the bat cave.

Nice. Everything blends together very nicely. All instruments and vocal sound very good, but I'm most impressed with the acoustic guitar recording/sound. The bass fills in things nicely, too.

Sounds very good Bat.  I would love to play live drums on this sometime.  I can't tell if the very low end is a shade too boomy or not.  I am not in a critical listening environment but I have heard your stuff many times before and this is like your normal stellar production.

Well I have never drank any of it. I seen a guy light it once and that was enough to persuade me not to drink it

The playing as always is hard to poke at. You can tell you have chops and good sounding guitars. The  vocals have that nice Eagles blend to them. How are you getting those harmonies? The old fashioned way or are you going through something? It doesn't sound artificial at all.

I just bought a new pair of ear buds to take on the go. Supposedly they compensate for bass loss that you get on a typical set of ear buds. What I'm getting in these is great, but I can't vouch for how they are translating the music yet.

    Nice job Bat.

    the guitarplayer
thanks for checking it on the high def phones....
you know i wonder if i should check mixes thru my surround...
i mean, i rarely listen to music that way, i wonder how many people do?

    BBB
    thanks bb.....
i think acoustics can either be the easiest, or the hardest thing to capture.
when i'm placing mics, i try to find the 'least' boomy spot.

    and that's pretty much it.
basic acoustic recording Modus Operendi: flat eq going in, maybe i use the 80hz rolloff on the mic, but you can almost always spend about half an hour moving the mic all over the place, and trip across one good spot, where the true sound of the guitar seems to go into the mic...
    and then don't move.
    LOL

    rimshot
drums, you are not the only one that has mentioned drums, but the way i hear this one, there is not drums.
it's almost more like a folk tune.....
or an old zeppelin song, they did a lot of songs without drums.....
the low end, if it IS too boomy, i can fix it.
it sounds deep and thick on my system right now, but i do not hear boomy.
that's one of those things i need to know.

Cool damn tune,  Guitar tones sound pretty kick @ss from here man.  Glad ARC seems to be working for you.  My mixes went to garbage on it.  I uninstalled after a few tries and it now holds down some papers for me.

thanks for the report on the events...
i'd love to hear events some time, they are one of the few of that level of monitors i've never heard...
but i hear from a lot of folks that use them.
    potato whisky?
ugh, that sounds a bit nasty.
    maybe it's reallygood! LOL

    starise
i would imagine that some good moonshine would have as much octane as that additive they sell at autoparts!
    heheh
harmonies are done the old fashioned way...
simply sung once, 2 and 3 part harmony...
then, certain harmonies i'll sing again, and blend the two tracks together on top of each other.
i do not know of anything to put harmonies thru, to make them sound any better than just singing them naturally, and trying to get a good blend by performing it well.
you know, earbuds are good for checking bass sometimes...
i know mine will tell me right away, if i have sub lows that i'm not getting off my monitors.
    thanks for commenting

thanks chuck, the ARC2 has definitely improved my monitoring.
    i find it pretty amazing.
there is still some weirdness to it, but if i sit in the sweet spot, i can really hear what my real lows, and mids are doing in a way i cannot, in my room, without it.

Sounds great! Your measurements are pretty close to mine. There is definitely a sweet spot...a small one. If I move my head around much at all, I can really tell. All in all ARC2 has to be one of the best things I've added to my humble little studio.

Oh hell yeah, classic Batsbrew.  Why aren't you all over the radio man?  I've been going through songs waiting for something like this...beautiful acoustics, tasty electric guitar..I'm not telling you anything you don't already know very well.  Man I wish I could get that acoustic sound you're getting - you've got to spill your secrets sometime.

That is a great song, the vocals are just so damn sweet, nice melody...it's stuck in my head.  You're a very good musician.  You need to be all over the radio, people need to hear this.

no, i dont use any software for anything really, except catching the performance, and then mixing it down
i do use software for drums (toontracks superior drummer) when i don't have live tracks handy..
and of course, on mixdown, and i have a few favorite compressors, limiters and eq's, a couple of delays, and that's it mostly.

(i've been singing since i was about 6 years old, trained in church, learned how to sightread studying classic piano, and then sang competively in highschool (chorus and ensemble), then 6 years of full time road work, i should know how to do it by now!)

    thanks for listening again

    clintmartin
the measurements for the arc thing, are pretty straightforward...
i didn't really understand it until i did it, and then it was dead obvious what was happening.
for CERTAIN studio setups, the ARC2 really works well.

    voda
    thanks man.

    radio, nah, it's overrated!!

there are really no secrets at all, to the sound....
my acoustics, a Taylor 414, and a Seagull Artist Mosiac, both sound very fine on their own....
and i just sit in front of a mic, and try to point it so that the guitar sounds balanced.

i run the mic into a fairly clean mic preamp (any good preamp will do) and run that into a compressor, set fairly mild, just barely reacting, and into the DAW to mix.

i'll often eq in the box, with low end roll off, high end lift, and maybe a freq or two tweaked up/down, and most often i'll leave them dry, or put a bit of room reverb on all the guitars at the guitar bus.

    simple.

Really enjoyed Moonshine, esp your raspy vocals. You sound a bit like Rod Stewart ! Good job.

What everyone else said. Guitar is the hero of this song for me, played and recorded well, like you said just find the right spot and go for it.
Great mix, I think you have the knack for it, well done.

thanks man. it's fun blending acoustic and electric, i may re-record a lot of the "Trouble" album with that approach.
gonna re-release it, so i might as well change it a bit...

    thanks so much.
    appreciate the listen

    thanks rebel.
the guitar riff is just a stone cold simple little thing, left hand wise..
the trick is getting the 'swing' into it.
