More Led for your head! (remixed 12/21)

I love this song because it's not an easy one to get the timing down. I used to play this with my band back in the dark ages but the singer was not Jim. I think this one was a stretch for him but it seems ok.

I changed a few notes in the song. Anyone care to guess where? I think the notes I changed gave it a more "metal" flare.

BTW - Danny, if you listen to this, this is the one I asked for your advice  on.

Enjoy!

I had a little trouble EQing the AHH Ahh parts.

Is this a recording done in a daw or a band recording? It has a real band sound. The guitar came through very well here.Overall instrumentals seemed good on my cans. The vocals seemed as if maybe the vocalist was going a little beyond what he was accustomed to and pinching the pipes. If he opens up and puts a little more force behind the words I think it could be a little better....I liked the song!

Another great cover from you. The overall sound could do with some thickening up though as the low end seems a bit lacking to my ears. I think the bass needs to go down another octave. Might be my speakers though. Your vocals sound way-better on this one, with only the high parts sounding a bit shakey. Overall, a very impressive rendition of this classic track.

Thanks for listening. I appreciate the comments.

Starise, It's done in the daw. I used to play this one all the time way back and am really comfortable with it.

Blipp, That's not me singing. It's a friend I came to have on another forum. The funny thing is, it's a forum based in the UK and Jim, the vocalist, and I grew up no more than a half hour apart in Ohio. Yes, he's stretching to get those notes.

    I updated the mix.

    http://soundcloud.com/ro-34/immigrant-song

I found some things that made me scratch my head. Why did I do that? There was this noise in the bass that turned out to be an EQ oversight on my part. Doh! Plus I tried to make the guitars sound less harsh.

I wonder why my PodXT doesn't sound as good through the Octa-capture as it did my old EMU-1616m (which is for sale btw. cheap). Maybe I just have to spend the time with it to rework my presets.

    Enjoy!

You chose a difficult song to record, and you played it well.  The new mix does sound better that the earlier mix, and it indicates to me that you can go just a bit further to really make this shine.  My only suggestion would be to bring the reverb level down a tad so as to bring the entire mix forward in the speakers.  Also, the volume level in general could come up a bit.  The punch and drive are there, but aren't as assertive as they could be.  Overall, good job.

    All the best,

Thanks for listening Lynn. I appreciate the comments. I struggled with this mixing the vocals. The vocalist lives a few states away and have no control on how he records. The guy who sang the Steppenwolf track did it here in my dungeon. Although, I only had a crappy mic then. There's a Tom  Petty track on my Soundcloud page where I used a better mic and it shows. Better AI also.

The vocals could use more energy.

Not sure the bass tone is right for this.

Not a bad stab at a very difficult cover. Singer has a little Bruce Dickinson quality to his voice, but he does struggle a bit here. Guitars are good, bass & drums need much more beef.

As usual, I'm late to the party, and all the pertinent crits have been made, so I'm just gonna' say that I liked it... a bunch.  TOUGH song to sing.  Jim is straining, but big deal... he's getting it across and that's what counts.  I couldn't hit those notes without throat surgery .

    Hi Robert,

'Hammer of the Gods' indeed!  I'm not a huge Zep fan but I do have a lot of respect for their music.

This is a tough tune to cover and you guys have done a great job with it. I've always been amazed at the way Page could take two notes and turn them into an anthem

    Nice work!

Have Bob O.  lay some of that chainsaw power guitar of his on here it will sound metal

It's got that My Sharona beat that woud pack the dance floor.  Maybe choke up on the mic and get a little proximity effect on the lead vox, and just more ommph on the mastering.

I kept wating for a guitar solo!

    Hi Robert,
this is a tough song to do, but I am a Zep fan and this is pretty well done.  guitars are done well, drums sound great and well mixed, IMO.  bass is good.  vocals are the weakest point in this, IMO.  this is a difficult song to sing.

I never thought about putting a solo in here. I may give it a try. I'm not promising anything though. I always loved taking on tunes that are complicated rhythmicly. I find them more fun than challenging or it's probably the challenge that makes it fun.

I think the music is pretty solid, guitars sound great man.  The vocal does sound like he's stretching for it.  It is a damn tough song to sing though... maybe layer a lower octave of the AHHH AHH AHHHH part to fatten it up some?   That's where I'd start to try to remedy that problem anyway.
