Those crashes a way too loud, and I struggled to hear the vocal, as it is way buried behind the guitars

BTW, how's EZKeys to work with? Is it like an automatic piano player?

Marius,

No, it's not an automatic piano player but it was helpful as I'm not that good of piano player.

Ah, thanks for that Bapu. I watched one of the instructional videos. Looks pretty cool. You sure put it to good use tho

+ + + 1 song    - - -  suggestions-
ride cymbal  loud and off time.
Thud of bass drum not sitting in the pocket with the bass guitar.
Vocals get lost
mix is smashed
I agree with all the suggestions above

Warren wanted more bass
Rimshot wanted more guitar
Danny wanted horns in their own place
And the ride is now(?) fixed
James thought the crashed were too loud

Hopefully I made it better all the way around.

Hey Ed
I'll leave the mix to the pros and just enjoy the song.  I'm diggin the guitar riff. I love the flow/performance of this piece and that is one catchy hook. EXCELLENT collab!

Everyone wants... ;)

I like where the vox sits.  I think it would be a little hard to listen to pulled out any more.  He can SING, no doubt about that, its just a question of whether one finds it pleasing or not.  I saw some comments about smoothing it out with melodyne - did you do that on this version?  Just curious.

I'm having problems with the backing vox on the chorus.  I'm it isn't the harmonizing, though - that's fine.  I think it's too "round" somehow - or maybe not coming from the "right place" in my headphones?  I wish I could better explain.... on the other hand, completely fabricating a backing vox with Antares...  nice.

What's that sound at 3:28??  I thought something had happened to my computer.... then I heard it again underneath and it was ok, but at 3:28 it stuck out funny.

But overall - I think the mix is good.  And, it's GREAT to hear MoochieMooch playing (all sorts of stuff)!!

@Freddy J - Thanks for the listen

@Kevin - Thanks for dropping by and having a listen

@Jules - Yes, on this version I melodyned the lead vocal to take out some of the "wild" vibrato. WRT the backing vocals, Mooch will be bringing in real singers to do BGVs so my my Antares stuff will be replaced. But I agree, to be able to generate BGVs is helpful even if it is only to get the idea across. Sorry to say I don't hear anything out of the ordinary at 3:28 (but it isn't the first time that has happened )

Then you'd better listen again. HaHaHa!

Seriously, though... There's a underlying decoration that I first noticed at 3:27/3:28 ish, that then runs through the next chorus.  Its not at all a problem anywhere else, but around 3:28 there is less happening, overall, so it was sort of startling.  It is something like a windows "stop" or "asterisk" sound. It might well be throughout the song, but it made me look at the bottom right of my monitor to see what my PC was trying to tell me....

Almost the equivalent of siren-ish sounds on your car stereo, making you look in the rear-view mirror for the police.... ;)

Thanks Jules. I may be getting an ear infection. My left ear is muffled so it may be a day or so before I can get to it.

It's a short little thing... And I may well be the ony one in the world to hear it, never mind your muffled ear.

This has a discticnt POCO flavor.  Which is a compliment in my book.  How do you get a Les Paul to sound like a Tele?

I like the tune and the whole sound but there are some pitch issues with vocals.  You could probably fix it with V-Vocal, but its always better to re-record.

I like the song, good job!  Nice guitar work.

@Daryl - Thanks for the comments. FWIW, the first two mixes had "raw" vocals. This mix was Melodyned (within my skill level) and although better, it probably could still use a re-record. The singer is in Chicago and I'm in the greater Los Angeles area; so I'm unable to book a do over session. That would be up to Mooch (Paul) in Chicago, as that is where the original recording was done.

Back for a second helping on the new mix.  I think Kevin's vocals sort of remind me of Geoff Tate on the early Queensryche stuff.

Sounds terrific, guys, great song with a great sentiment for a good cause.

hey guys - I didn't hear any of the previous versions.  this is pretty good.  I think Jules is right about the vocals - he can sing and it's just a matter of whether one finds his voice pleasing or not.  I know that feeling well!

I'm not really hearing any separation of the instruments, they all seem squished into the same soundspace.  the performances are great, tho.

sorry I hope that doesn't upset someone, it just seems cramped together, if you know what I mean.

I really like the tune bapu.  The vocal is probably in the 'acquired taste' category.  He sings the heck out of this thing.

Nothing in the mix bugged me.  It sounds pro.  I like the placement of all the instruments.

Tremendously nice job.

Peace,

Ian

EXkeys now?  What next?  :)  (and since everyone else wants something up louder, I would say if you're gonna play the keys, you could bring them up a touch or two (.75 dB maybe?  lol)...so I don't have to strain to hear them.

All around, fantastic writing, performances and mix.  Great song!

@ Shawn - Thanks for the listen.

@ Bob - A double shot? Thanks again for stopping by.

@ Beagle - Thanks for the listen. Not sure if you mean EQ or Pan when you say "squished into the same soundspace"

@ Ian - Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to listen.

@ Janet - Thanks for the kudos. To me, the piano part was not meant to be "there" but just under everything. But maybe once the real BGVs are done maybe I'll consider giving the piano a boost.

Nice one guys. Only nit I heard was that the chorus comes in and it's way 'bigger'. I guess 'bigger' is better in a chorus, but, somethin just seemed out of place with it. You can even see it on the soundclous waveform.

Well.... truthfully, I find the song over compressed which renders the dynamics (and thus auditory interest) rather flat. While Kevin is on key, the vibrato really harms the sonority as he is off key when he goes above and below the fundamental (vibrato should be a harmonic component). I suspect if I was producing this song, there might be some hard feelings as I would force take after take to get rid of it. I generally harp on (false) vibrato because it is too often used as a "search" for tone, such as here. I suspect that this is a done deal and you are not too likely to re-record the vox, but I would. This is, however, only one man's opinion.

Thanks for your honesty!  Bless you mom's everywhere!!
