More venting: Sonar X1 won't recognize my MIDI keyboard anymore

I have an Axiom 49. I'm using the MIDI out to a USB MIDI port. I've been using it this way for the last couple of weeks with no problem. All of a sudden today, I can no longer use my keyboard. It shows up in the preferences window, but when I play the keyboard no MIDI activity shows up in the inspector. I tried unplugging and plugging the USB cable back in. After trying this, my machine crashed.

Keep up the good work Cakewalk!

some people have had issue with the USB power to their axiom I've read in the past and they just use a power socket and a midi interface.

    I haven't BUT I use a powered hub.
you mean your solely using the USB plugs.. how are you using it , via a hub or a powered one?

you might find something you've added to that chain is draining power.. which is why I use a powered hub.

I would say , unplug it, use CCleaner to get rid of rego entries for it.. and install clean version of the m-audio drivers.

install the sftware again THEN plug it in after a reboot

I have found that restarting Sonar corrects quite a few of the errors that pop up from time to time at least once per session, including my midi inputs no longer working.  Try restarting the program next time you encounter this.

    Just checking the basics............

You say the Axiom shows up in preferences, but is it selected as an input? Is it selected as an input in the MIDI track as well?

Make sure the blue "Input Echo" button is lit on the midi channel you are trying to play.

Thanks. I tried that. It didn't solve the problem. I'm back to using the USB output of the Axiom. At least that works. I wanted to use the MIDI out because the connection from the keyboard is much more solid. The USB connection on the Axiom is flimsy, and disconnects occasionally (e.g. when I move the keyboard).

Thanks to all for your replies. I know you're trying to help. I was just venting. There's no solution, other Cakewalk releasing a more stable X1. I've been using Cakewalk / Sonar / X1 for almost two decades now -- with MIDI controllers. Suffice it to say, I'm doing all the right things.

Fortunately I'm able use my Axiom with X1 as long as I use the USB connection from the Axiom. I wanted to avoid that because the USB connection on the Axiom is very flimsy.

What you're all seeing is the "new" me :-) I used to be forgiving of "nuances" in Sonar, but now I've hit my limit and have become jaded and cynical. To help me cope with the inspiration-killing onslaught of bugs in X1, I vent by posting about a bug whenever I experience it. I know it's probably not very constructive. Thanks for indulging.

Still, to be fair: X1 is an awesome product -- even with all the bugs. I'm probably not the typical user either. I use a lot of simple instrument tracks (sometimes 60 or 70) and do all of my work in the PRV or Track View, and I use screen sets. I'm probably pushing X1 to the limit (even with my i7 / 12 GB laptop). It's the only way I know how to get the job done -- that job being this: http://soundcloud.com/mike-leghorn/sets/the-planets/

So it's not seeing your USB midiport. Have you tried setting that up again as if it's not seeing it -ie starting from scratch.

Why so quick to call this a bug? I troubleshoot this type of thing every day (both at Cakewalk with SONAR and at my part time gig with Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, Digital Perfomer etc.) and it is almost always setup or driver related and not the host. There are of course exceptions, but I think you can get your Axiom to play nice with SONAR.

I'd look into if your system getting MIDI at all.

Try installing MIDI-OX or some other MIDI monitor and monitor the MIDI port to see if any activity is coming in. http://www.midiox.com/

If the MIDI data isn't coming in period, troubleshoot your drivers for your MIDI devices and any settings on your Axiom to make sure it's sending note data out to your computer correctly.

If the MIDI data IS coming in, but not into SONAR, I'd check your Controller Surface settings to make sure you're not accidentally stealing the MIDI stream for control data. If a Control Surface plug-in picks up the data, it will assume it's being used for controlling SONAR and might not pass it to your tracks. A good way to rule this out is to just temporarily try deleting all Control Surface plug-ins so they don't monitor any MIDI ports.

I believe the AXIOM has several MIDI ports it exposes to hosts so it might just be a matter of configuring your ports correctly under both Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Devices and Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Control Surfaces.

    Hi Mike,

FWIW, I'd double check and make sure the MIDI controller is working as expected (outside of Sonar).
As Ryan mentioned, this type of issue is rarely host related.

If you've installed a lot of MIDI devices (over time), you may need to sweep the registry clean... and reload the drivers for those units you're actually using.
M-Audio has a utility for doing this...

    They do indeed at  http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers&k=driver&s=8&o=%20Windows+XP&f=84

They also have a KB that discusses this behavior a bit on their website here: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=70c924d77af43c5bfcb79ad604d9ea38

Why so quick to call this a bug?

The keyboard stopped working in the middle of my session. I didn't change anything. To try to fix the problem, I unplugged the midisport from my USB, got the standard message from X1 -- saying it recognized I unplugged my keyboard. Then I plugged it back in, and got the standard message saying it recognized that I plugged it back in, so I accepted it as the MIDI in -- and it shows in preferences.

I'm using the USB output of my AXIOM now, and it works fine -- for the most part: Whenever I start up X1  I don't get any sound from audio tracks, or MIDI coming in from my keyboard until I press 'P' (for preferences), wait about 20 seconds while Windows complains that Sonar has become unresponsive, then when the preferences window finally shows up, I hit "OK" (without changing anything), then I can start working on my music. Basically, it takes me about a minute to load X1 because of this. Maybe all these issues are related?

Sounds like your MIDIsport is flaking out then and there's issues with your audio device if SONAR can't access them on launch.

How is this SONAR's fault again?

Ding, ding, ding, ding <----------------- Sounds of alarm bells ringing in my head.

I have a MIDIsport 4x4 and the drivers are awful. They are a little more stable than they were on x64 but I would suggest they are your issue.
Mine would stop working when they felt like it, get lost completely. At one stage a driver uninstall and reinstall was my SOP for startup. Strangely having upgraded my system from an ASUS board to Gigabyte most of my issues have disappeared. Go figure.

I probably was too quick to judge. Sounds more likely now that the issue is with the MIDIsport drivers. I'll see if there are newer drivers. If not, I'll stick with the USB out of the Axiom.

I used the axiom without issue usb wise, but some don't  / said it was best with power supply / midi..

maybe look at a cakewalk usb interface.. I use one for my xg module , does what it says on the box (the 3 port one) . *AND* supports the OS based drivers = less hassle. I find it ODD that the older midi sport  / m-audio stuff stopped working, and they couldn't update drivers. It just felt to me like they wanted more money.

    http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/By-Category.aspx/Cakewalk-Hardware

I don't have much faith in m-audio and their drivers from a number of "issues" I have by them / used in the past.
