Most disturbing photo I have seen in a long time

That is definately a strange picture.

Once you see the pictures of what they do, then you'll be truly disturbed.

You are right Zungle and I didn't mean to minimize the horror of the Klan but it is a part of our history, an unsavory one, but still a part. Ignoring it wont change it. Not being a part of it or tolerating friends who are sympathetic will change it. I guess being out in the NW there is more of this sort of thing, well in Idaho anyway. I am in GA and have never seen anyone in a klan outfit nor have I known anyone who talked about it. Thank God things are changing but in this world there will always be hatred and people willing to act on it.
Seeing it may be a good thing lest people forget.
 
I can imagine them laughing under those masks of hatred and is really creepy. Remember the democrat senator from West Virginia who was a klan leader... can't remember his name. He was given a bit of a pass because of his age... and this picture is 1929. Thangs have changed a LOT since 1929 (for most people).
 
I was born in 1952 and was raised in segregation, raised when using the "N" word was common. As a child I thought nothing of it, it meant nothing. I graduated HS in 1970. Full integration came in 1971 with bussing and all that. In that climate of social change and realization, I stopped using that word. I wish I could say the same for a lot of other people in the rural south, but it wasn't so.
Yeah, I had certain prejudices built in but I made a concious effort to not let them out, to act differently from what came natural.. after a while it became natural to see blacks as no different, though that isn't what I (or much of anyone else white at the time) was taught.
 
I (and another guy) were the only whites at ABAC (a farming college in south GA) who had a black room mate. I visited his home and other places because I made up my mind that my prejudice was wrong.
 
Now, if people ignore the ugliness of the past they will not know of the wickedness and may well fall into the same thing again. I see no problem with posting the picture and I don't think anyone here thinks that it is an admirable picture or people to emuate.
 
I am not trying to start an argument with you, I like you... just stating another POV. Our history is chock FULL of abominations. We practiced genocide against the native americans for a couple of centuries then we pinted out finger at Germany for doing the same thing... the only real difference is that we won and the Germans lost. Hyprocracy is almost as ugly as bigotry. There are few true racists, we were in dealing with the "indians", the nazis were in dealing with Jews and other minorities.
 
The klan symbolizes this racism. Most people wh are considered to be racists are really just bigots... they just plain don't like other races, we ALL have prejudices, some are helpful some are harmful.
 
Racism considers other races to be inherantly inferior.
Bigotry just don't like other races.
Prejudice "judges a book by its cover" "a person by the way the look, dress, talk, or other things" a situation by things they see or hear... it can be, as I said harmful or helpful. We have swung too far in our fight against racism and bigotry by including any sort of prejudice. Profiling, for example, though possibly unfair to some people at some times may actually be helpful if not utilized by someone who is also either a racist (not likely) or a bigot.
 
We had best not forget the past and we had better always be on guard in our own heart to not allow racial bigotry to take root... if someone is a racist, they need a lot more help for the roots are already too deep. I remember black and white water fountains/bathrooms/windows at fast food resturants/seperate everything... and while at the time, being a kid, it seemed normal but after it came to an end I was able to see it for what it was. Everyone needs to get over it and never forget... never forget. IMO
 
Anyway... Sharke didn't post this pic and say, "hey, this is funny... look at this". It is educational.

It seems to me that if we're banning controversial topics of discussion on this forum, that Sonar X2a should be the first and foremost taboo....LOL

I for one would like to think that the issue of the Klan being evil is not a "controversial" subject among the regulars here...

I mean if the subject were "affirmative action" or something like that, you'd expect a certain diversity of views. Can't imagine anyone here standing up the KKK though.

It was merely a picture from a general interest photo archive that I would have understood that he thought was bizarre enough to flag up here.  It was certainly that.
 
Any interpretations of it being anything else came after that.
