Mother Nature made me sad
I'm sitting up late working (organizing my music actually) with the window open when I hear some weird sounds outside and look out just in time to see a grunting coyote running off with a crying rabbit. The attack took place in one of four front yards (including ours), but I don't know which. All I saw was the coyote heading down the middle of the street with it's prize still alive. I'm really hoping it's not the little bunny that lives out in our backyard. We've had her since she was the last of the litter of five to survive and she's not afraid of us at all. It always makes me smile to see her out there but I know she sometimes goes to the front yard as well and there aren't a lot of other bunnies around here right now (so, yes, we only have ONE out back, not 12 - lol). I've only seen one other but it's another female. Even if it wasn't our little girl, it still was a bit disturbing to hear the happy grunting of the coyote and the pathetic crying of the bunny... *Sigh...*

Oh Blah Dee... Oh Blah Dah...... life (and death) goes on. Clearly a case of mixed emotions..... Ummmm tasty rabbit...... Then again..... if the rabbit was a regular and constant visitor to your yard...... sad.

Yep, she lived in the backyard and would get within just a few feet of us (3-4). We never tried to touch her or feed her though, she had plenty of long green grass which is a bunny's favorite food (carrots are a myth) so we just let her be. Here's a collage I made of her when she was young and still being fed by mama (ya, I even have her "baby" pictures - lol!). Every day when I check on my 83 year-old mother she always asks for a bunny report; she's not going to like today's...

Sad. I'm mildly surprised that you have coyotes that far north.

I knew about tons of wild life. Just not coyotes. I usually associate them with dessert areas. We have plenty of them down here.

Sad. Though of course that's the way nature works - and I love coyotes just as much as bunnies. Heck, I like animals, period. I could probably recreate the entire animal food chain in our house.

Nature is tuff. Easy to get attached to them when they make their home close by or make regular visits. Hope it wasn't "yours".

My Mom's joke about my moving from here has been "Can you take the bunny with you?" I guess that won't be an issue now... Side note: I definitely haven't seen the bunny today, but it's hot (going to be above 90 again) so she's usually hiding somewhere cool anyway. I just wish I hadn't heard it, even in the nature films you see on TV you don't have to hear the prey crying...

We watched a huge red tail hawk in a tree acorss the road this afternoon. I was watching with my binoculars, he was really big. I was waiting for him to spot a chipmonk or something and he was looking but a bunch of crows spotted him first. He made a stand, spread his wings and dared them, then finally flew off. He was really something. My wife saw one at her office a few months ago take off with a squirrel but he dropped it. We used to live really close to a large lake and one day there was a bald eagle in the top of a tree in the back yard. I cannot tell you how big he was. I didn't realize it until he took to the wing. He must have had an 8 ft wing span, it was awesome. I went to check that the cats were still around... We have had coyotes in the north metro Atlanta area take dogs off the leash while people walked them, cats from the backyard. Coyotes can be more dangerous than you might think. http://www.varmintal.com/attac.htm I'd put out a trap or put a .22 mag in it if I were you. J

BTW, I have seen deer well inside the city of Atlanta, I know there are coyotes there, even downtown, and there is an epidemic of raccoons. The raccoons carry so much rabies it is against the law to catch and release them, you have to destroy them. J
