I thought the new "Planet of the Apes" was absolutely rubbish The Thing (2011) is excellent. No spoilers here. Inception has to be film of the decade for me, brilliant story, great Fx, and DiCaprio goes from strength to strength as an actor Avatar was good for the Fx, not so much the story line

Good idea. Just don't watch the Directors Cut. Sure, there's a few deleted scenes that have been reinstated but the whole film is 9 minutes shorter than the original The pace of the original is what builds the tension, IMHO

Hi, I'm not sure you will like my recomendations, but let's give it a try, anyway. Generally, recommending movies that are "top ten" is ... not something I do. These will be in the tv and you can see them in your sleep, and when you are having sex! So why bother? Fun things ... go to that one store that has an insane selection of weird stuff ... that you have no idea what it is ... when you get done stucking on Titanic by one of the greatest robbers of ideas in the movie business, then let's see if you can try any of these: (please ignore the order!) Bedazzled - original with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Very twisted ... and the dig the "peace scare" comment about ... also the one about the lies ... or the one about advertising! Performance - With Mick Jagger and James Fox. One of the best films ever made, but terribly difficult to know what the fudge it is about, and it pulls a twist ending that will ahve you wanting to see it again to figure it out. Very literary and beautifully written and photographed by Nicholas Roeg. Fabulous use of music as well, and ... dig that rap and when it was done! Journey of Hope - Oscar winning film about the Kurds that had music by several ECM artists, that was used to an insanely beautiful effect. There are moments here ... that just explode with the visuals and that music. You can find some of this stuff in Jan Garbarek's Eventyr album or Terje Rypdal's album called Eos. Ran - Akira Kurosawa's slight version of King Lear ... not for everyone, but its long shots and amazing use of visuals and the acting is magnificent and then some. If you are tired after 3 hours, you're not into movies and you need to go get some dope so you can think you are high! Prospero's Books - A very different take on Shakespeare and an absolute nightmare if you dig someone crawling a building on the outside and think that is exciting to see in movies! The visualization of the whole thing is insane and it's almost like you are inside Prospero's mind the whole time. The movement, dancing, visuals are riveting ... and Sir John Gielgud's wording, will have you rethink Shakespeare ... his wording is so clear ... /// same film maker also did two other films that are insane. The Pillow Book has a portion of the screen running another film the whole time ... and the only think that you can think of ... is that the person's mind during what we are seeing in the film? ... think about it! ... /// and the other is The Cook, the Thief, His Wide and Her Lover ... with one of the best endings in any movie EVER. Not a film for the squimish at all, but watching Helen Mirren and Michael Gambon duke it out ... yeah ... WARNING ... some of the stuff you might see in any of these 3 films might not be what you want to see! Jean Luc Godard -- if you ever have a chance, try catching one of two of this guy's films, specially the early ones. He dislikes "film conventions" that you are stuck on ... and do not realize that they are shaping your memory and attitudes ... and then you see a guy playing kid with a camera right in front of you ... and many people don't like it. But it's fun and crazy and weird, and he doesn't do this to just the camera! Remember that. Of course, if you want to watch Juliet Binoche read the bible nude ... that's another story! Cinema Paradiso -- a remastered, or cleaned up version of this has been sent out. A terrific loving memory about the history of film, and what you used to not be able to see and such ... it is really nice, even if this is not something that Americans can really relate to. Censorchip in America has not been that bad ... but it was in many other places! Burnt By The Sun -- Oscar winning film by the Russian director. A lovely film ... that you find out real quick is not nice ... all around ... but in the end ... the gracefulness of youth, and its beauty is the one that has the perspective ... "he got burnt by the sun of the revolution" ... and I like to translate that these days to ... "we're being burnt by the sun of advertising!" The Fencing Master -- Pedro Olea's masterpiece about a school of Fencing and its master. And the bad guy? ... you have to see it to believe it and the fencing in there makes Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone look like ... a movie! Incredible costumes and period piece. More as I think of them!

Some other recommendations: Rear Window (Hitchcock) - Longtime favorite Mystery Men - Silly send up of the Superhero genre and I love it. LOTR - Yeah. I know. When I have 12 hours to spend on a movie, I watch all three Extended Release editions back to back. Serenity - Movie based upon the Greatest Sci-Fi TV show in history, Firefly. (I may be opinionated.)

Hi, Heaven's Gate -- Michael Cimino's film right after The Deerhunter -- also a massively good picture. This one was trashed silly by the movie studio's PR folks and then, movie critics started hitting it on its length and what not. No one complained about the length in The Deerhunter, though the movie studio was upset with it! The movie got raped, and screwed up, and torn up ... and what was eventually released was insanely bad and so off kilter and out of order that it was obviously screwed with. The movie is slow developing, but you know who the corrupt mf'rs are, and who is robbing who ... which you can't tell when you see the screwed up version ... that makes you think that these poor workers were just a bunch of tucked up people ... just what corporate America wants you to think? In this case it was the corruption that killed the showing of the corruption ... because they knew it was about them ... not just a story about the old west and how the rich raped the indians and everyone else to get their ... whatever! And the film is brutal about that evil! The Posse - the son of the Van Peebles family did a "black" western that is really good, but it will never be appreciated by a white audience! And the film is solid, well directed and done. But no one will see it, and the studios do not want independents like Van Peebles (and his father!!!) to make a name for themselves and take away that precious million from Harry Potter, Avengers or Titanic ... !!! Firefly/Serenity -- (thx UB) ... had it on my list. I like the series a lot, but the movie did not improve or disprove what was already there. It felt like this was just a continuation of the story. Very enjoyable. Sad ending. The "western" in space thing was actually very well adapted and done. I do think this was far superior to Buffy and anything else he has done!

joakes The Swedish made English version of the Millenium series (NOT with D. craig) I just bought the trilogy with the extended versions, each movie split into 2 episodes..9 hrs in total. It's worth it though, really fleshes out the characters, especially the boxing instructor, I never really worked out how he fitted in before.

Oh Casablanca!! Absolutely, a fantastic movie!! Someone mentioned The Thing 2011, +1 from me, if only for the opening joke Shutter Island anyone? Stellar movie and I had some serious inner conflicts during that. Pan's Labyrinth is another great suggestion in this thread and another +1 from me Actually, Suckerpunch (or is it Sucker Punch) I can recommend too. Oh, and Kick Ass if you want something out of the ordinary. To wrap it up; once again; Hanna is such a great movie I can't say it enough times

And an honurable mention to Danny The Dog and Inglorious Basterds. And while I'm at it; Reservoir Dogs. And there's an Australian movie well suited for us music nerds called One Perfect Day. If you find it, you won't regret watching it And the by far greatest buddy movie (IMO) must be Grand Theft Parsons starring Johny Knoxville. It is excellent!
