Moving Project Folders? [solved]

I'm trying to clean up my main hard drive.  If I wanted to move Project Folders around, will that be problematic if I want to go into a project later?

For instance, can I create a new folder for a genre and move all the projects into that folder?  Then perhaps move that entire folder to another hard drive on the same computer?

Any considerations I should think of before moving everything around?

It doesn't matter where you put your projects, but if you move your project audio to a different location, the first time that you open a project Sonar will tell you that it cant find the audio. IIRC it will give you various options, one of which is to browse to the new location and choose the file, and then search for other missing files in the same folder. Once it has found the files and loaded the project just resave the project.

Alternatively, you can just use 'save as,' check 'copy all audio with project' and choose your new locations.

You could also save your projects as cakewalk bundles, then reopen them selecting the new locations for your audio and projects. This has the advantage of trimming away unused audio data as well. A proper clean up!

Thanks - I'll have to look into the Project Bundles.

    I wouldn't.

The most reliable way is to use Save As like tenfoot described

I've been moving the files for the past couple of hours and it seems to be working without a hitch.  Basically, I just wanted to move all my older projects to a different hard drive - also organize them by Genres, Larger Projects, Different Bands, Personal Projects, etc.  It appears to have worked fine with just moving the file folders.

That's great news - and surprising! So you were able to move the audio folder to a different location on a different drive with presumably a different letter and the projects still found the location?
Is each project located in ts own folder wth it's own audio folder?

Oh yeah - I moved the PROJECT folder - within the project folder there is the Sonar Project File and the Audio Folder in the same folder. I did move them to a new drive - with a different letter.  I just double clicked on the Project file to open the projects and they ran without a hitch.

That's excellent! I guess the projects now reference a relative rather than absolute file path - a big improvement.

As long as the default per-project audio folder format is used, projects store references to audio data with relative paths. This makes moving projects to a new location safe.It does not matter if the new location is on the current drive or a different drive, SONAR opens the project and reads the audio data relative to the current project location.

What does not work is storing the per-project audio folder somewhere other than the default location and moving both the project and audio folder. In this case the project stores references to the audio using absolute paths. It is not a fatal error though. SONAR will display a dialog asking where the missing files are located.

Thanks Steve - got it. That is still a huge step forward from the old days of absolute file paths and another very good reason to use default per project audio folders.
