    They charge extra for this I think it is like $20 bucks. Don't ask me why. I think it is a licensing issue. You can buy it from the cakewalk store.

    You can export to a wave and you have other export types for sound except this the MP3.

    There are threads here that tell you how to use the lame mp3 encoder. Works very well-maybe search using those words.

    Does this mean you have to pay AGAIN if you have the encoder for 8.5.3?  Or can you just used that? (I need to check if I have the 64bit version too)

    Does this mean you have to pay AGAIN if you have the encoder for 8.5.3?

    In the past, if you paid for the mp3 activation from Cakewalk, you don't have to buy it again for another Cakewalk product. Users of Cakewalk Pro Audio, were able to use the mp3 activation they bought with that program in all the versions of SONAR up to SONAR 8. So I don't think you would have to buy the mp3 Activation again if you bought it for SONAR 8.5.3.

    However, there is a different mp3 activation file for SONAR 32 bit and 64 bit. If you run SONAR x64, contact Cakewalk and they will hook you up with a link for the x64 friendly mp3 Activation download.

    Re:Mp3 Encoder ? 2010/12/22 04:20:37 (permalink)

    The best and most widely MP3 encoder on the market today and no one mentionned it. USE THE LAME ENCODER

    The LAME encoder is FREE and even Scott R. Garrigus, or was it Craig Anderton, well one of them wrote an article on how to configure Sonar to use the Lame MP3 encoder. Also, when you upgrade, from an earlier version of Sonar and allow Sonar to copy its settings, the MP3 settings are copied to the next version as well.

    Follow these directions:

    If you don't want to unlock(buy) the cakewalk mp3 encoder, you can invoke the Lame mp3 encoder directly from SONAR 8. With this you don't need to first export to wav and then encode to mp3. Remember that the Lame mp3 encoder is high quality, open source and free.

    Instructions:
    Open SONAR 8 and go to Tools -> External Encoder Configuration utility
    In the Friendly Name Field write: Lame Mp3 Encoder.
    In the Extension field write: .mp3.
    In the Description field write whatever you want.
    In the Path field write the path where the Lame encoder is located. That is where lame.exe and lame_enc.dll are located. I keep my Lame encoder in my C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Lame Folder or (copy and past the extracted zip file to your Sonar shared utilities folder and then when you have to perform this step, click the browse button to find the location.
    In the Command Line field write: lame -b 192 -m j %I %O
    Press Save button.
    Uncheck Keep Wave File.

    This will export to a 192Kbps, joint stereo mp3 file. If you want 128Kbps, replace 192 with 128
    in the Command Line field. The next time you click on File->Export->Audio in SONAR 8 you'll
    find 'Lame mp3 encoder' as a type of audio.

    Here is the link for the Lame mp3 encoder

    hence why it's so much easier to use something like wavosaur; i often need two different mp3 bitrates, say a 128k one for streaming and a 320k for my ipod or sharing; using wavosaur (or audacity) you can select this in export dialogue...saves messing around with command lines!

    Re:Mp3 Encoder ? 2010/12/22 04:47:48 (permalink)
    There are some external MP3 encoder profiles supplied with X1, including for LAME. You'll find them as part of the 02_SONAR_X1_Producer.part1.exe, and part 2, download files. Once they have been decompressed to a new folder, they are here:

    \SONAR X1 Setup Files\Utilities\External Encoder Profiles

    It includes files such as:

    LAME MP3 Very High Quality Stereo.reg
    LAME MP3 Medium Quality Joint Stereo.reg
    FLAC High Quality.reg
    Ogg Vorbis Standard Quality.reg
    (and quite a few more)

    There are no instructions as far as I can tell though!

    For those who don't know, .reg files are simply text files that contain registry settings. To add them to your registry, all you have to do is double-click them in Windows Explorer. A quick look at the high quality LAME file in Notepad shows this:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CakewalkExtAudioEncoders\{AF1830F5-FD74-4AA3-8797-FE6B4A19350C}]
    "Name"="LAME MP3 Very High Quality Stereo"
    "Description"="LAME MP3 Very High Quality Stereo"
    "Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Cakewalk\\Shared Utilities\\External audio Encoders\\LAME"
    "Extension"=".mp3"
    "CommandLine"="lame %I -b 128 -m s -h -c -V 1 -B 320 %O"
    "InProcess"=dword:00000000
    "KeepWaveFile"=dword:00000000

    Clearly you will also need to install LAME to the following folder before it will work:

    C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\External audio Encoders\LAME

    Of course, you could just edit the path in the .reg file (before double-clicking it to add it to your registry), if you want to install LAME somewhere else. Be sure to use double backslashes, as shown above, for the new path if you do though.

    HTH.

    I'm gonna repeat this for the lazy ppl like me (it has been mentioned somewhere burried under lots of posts).

    Google "Aaron's Sonar MP3 Encoder Patch". You should download V2 (32bit & 64bit). It's basically a patch that adds registery keys and it uses the free Lame encoder. So it's free.

    It adds export options in the export dropdown where you normally can choose to export to .wav, .aiff, etc. You can now also choose for example Mp3 128 or Mp3 192.

    I too never understood why an MP3 encoder was not part of Sonar.

    Is there some legal thing-or-other that stops CW from including it as part of the Sonar package?
    Just curious.

    I paid for the MP3 Activation, too. I'm satisfied because I like the graphical user interface of the Cakewalk MP3 Encoder, as it is so convenient to choose any bitrate or add MP3 ID info without having to leave SONAR.

    We still have no built in MP3 export that's free!?

    What decade do they think this is!?
    Why can free Audacity do it and Sonar cant!

    This is all getting to be a bit much.

    I assume Audacity is a free product?  I think that's the difference.  May apps don't include MP3 encoders because of licencing restrictions.  I tried to rip a CD in MediaMonkey yesterday and got a similar message.  If only Ogg was common - sigh...

    I'm not in agreement with "hidden costs" to a product which I have bought in good faith.  My temporary fix (a bit of a schlep) is to import the .wav file into my iTunes program and export it as mp3 from there.  iTunes is available from their website free of charge. (It produces an mp3 file that does NOT pop and crack as I have read in other cakewalk bloggs !! Hope this helps. Regards

    Well, another stumper.  Why on God's green Earth can you NOT convert Wav to MP3 without having to go to Google, Cakewalk and a host of other sites trying to figure out what to get / do?  This seems like a BASIC feature, folks.  What the $%^&?  So now, I have to go find an "MP3 encoder" and hope that it works seemlessly or get ready to do yet another round of searches trying to look for answers.
