Multichannel interface and EXTERNAL EFX. How to setup?

Hi guys,

Another stupid questin with hope for clever answers ;)

I have multichannel interface - Edirol UA-1000 (10 in-10out)
I want to plug in external EFX - as a insert.
I have no problem with adding external insert to channel, but - and this is my question:
- is it right, that when I activate all the outputs, every pair appears in Console View as MASTER? Do I have 5 master pairs... What the... ? ;)
Or maybe I have to change some settings or something? Or - it should be like this?

I don't know, so I ask you for help.

Thxx,

When you say "Master" I guess what you mean is the hardware outputs.

In your console view you should have tracks on the left,  hardware outputs on the right and Busses in the middle.  One of your busses you name "Master".  You normaly route this to an output pair so you can hear it.

Your external efx can use any of the hardware outputs that you currently are not using for monitors, headphone sends, etc.  an example would be..

    1-2  Main output
3-4  Secondary outputs for alternate speakers
    5-6  Headphones (in vocal booth)
    7-8  EFX Send 1
    9-10 EFX Send 2

the EFX returns go to normal input channels.

    Hope this helps you.

Yes, thank you. Just I needed to be sure that I use it right way.
Those physical outputs made me asing myself "eee - wassup doc".. ;)

btw. I don't plan to make returns to another tracks, just use EFX as insert on specified track.

It's still called a return though.

You'll need one pair of outputs (typically channels 1/2) routed to your monitor speakers.
You want to route the Master Output bus in Sonar to this pair of outputs.

    To setup external/outboard EFX/processors:
You need to route audio to the external unit (from the audio interface)... and you need to route the processed audio (from the external unit) back to the audio interface.

If the external unit is stereo, route two output channels from the audio interface to the external unit's inputs.
Now patch the external units outputs to two input channels on the audio interface.
To keep things manageable, use the same corresponsing input/output channel numbers.
IOW, If you're sending audio to the external unit via audio interface outputs 3/4, route audio from the external unit to audio interface inputs 3/4.

You can then use the External Insert plugin to "insert" the outboard unit onto a track/bus.
With the External Insert plugin, set the output/input routing to match where the unit is patched... run the ping test to compensate for any latency... and save the result as a preset.  Next time, just load the External Insert plugin and choose the preset.
If you're using outboard gear, when you go to bounce-down a mix... you'll need to do so in realtime (not off-line).

Thanks Jim, I know how inserts works, but I've just wondering about 5 pairs of outputs, which are described as MASTER - on right side of CV.
Karyn's answer, that "it has to be like that", because these are just physical outputs - is clear.

But - thanks for advice about "pinging" and saving as a preset.
+1 for you, and - back to playing around :D

The topic for today is: using TC Harmony G XT (stompbox) as a insert EFX:)
