Multiple PC's
Hi, I've got a Dell 1.6 GHz machine with 1 GB RAM that I'm not doing anything with. I'd like to use it to run virtual instruments part from my main machine that runs Sonar. Here are my two questions: 1. What would be the best way to connect this up? Would there be someway to use firewire to do this? My AI is a Tascam FW-1804. I'm already using the ADAT in's on it, but not the SPDIF, so I'm guessing that may be my best bet to go out of that machine. 2. Will Sonar projects "remember" what the virtual instruments on that machine is doing the same way it remembers the virtual instruments actually in the project? Thanks! Donny

Which one is better, MIDI over LAN or FX Teleport?

ORIGINAL: doncolga Hi, I've got a Dell 1.6 GHz machine with 1 GB RAM that I'm not doing anything with. I'd like to use it to run virtual instruments part from my main machine that runs Sonar. Will Sonar projects "remember" what the virtual instruments on that machine is doing the same way it remembers the virtual instruments actually in the project? Thanks! Donny Donny, I just tried the FX Teleport demo a few nights ago and I was very impressed with it. When you install the software, it makes additional versions of your existing plugins with LAN added to the end of the name. When you open up your project the plug ins are automatically opened up on the slave machine and all the settings are rembered. I only tested it with Voxengo Gliss EQ, Pristine space, Marquis compressor and the PLParEQ3. It worked flawlessly. FX Teleport uses a LAN cable (CAT5) to transfer the audio. No additional digital audio I/O are needed. AFAIK any softsynths that are VST will work the same way with FX Teleport. Download the FX Teleport demo just to test out. If you like it it's pretty cheap. I was wondering what happens when you render an audio file using FX Teleport plugs. Will the rendering still use the FX Teleport enable plug ins or do I have to play back my mix in realtime and record it to a stereo track? This doens't really answer questions but it's an example of how I use my older machine: My (older) machine is primarily a Gigastudio machine. In this scenario the audio is transfered between RME audio cards in each machine. The gigastudio machine uses the older Digi9652 and my new machine (setup for tracking and mixing) has the HDSP9652. I have an ADAT patch bay to keep all my optical I/O organized. I can create a MIDI sequence on my new machine and record the audio from the Gigastudio machine (which are connected via MIDI as well) into the same project the MIDI is playing from on the new machine. Once the audio is recorded I then archive the MIDI tracks and continue with my live tracking of guitars, bass etc...This is the no hassle approach to using Gigastudio with Sonar. Rewire is a PITA and trying to run Gigastudio and Sonar audio on the same machine was useless. Just FYI, Gigastudio now has a VST version which should play nice with Sonar on one machine. HTH, Eric

CJ are you talking about FX Teleport? If so, all you need is a LAN. If you are running Norton Internet security or a firewall you may need to set up exceptions for the software to work. Eric

CJ, BTW, I live about 30 minutes from you in Delray Beach. I was thinking of trying to organize a users metting in our area. Sound interesting to you? If so do you know anyone else that would be interested in attending a meeting? Eric

It should work fine. How much you can get out of it is another story. A PII might not be much of a help but the PIII may be of some value in this scenario. My older machine is a P4 3gig. The new machine is a Core 2 Duo. Eric
