Multiple outputs for JS2

Trying to figure out how to send my JS2 outputs separately. I want to try eg kick on one track, snare separate track etc.

Is there an easy way to do it? Anyone know, or done it before?

    Hi Rob

Check out this video. He is using Reaper, but it should be the same thing in Music Creator. I haven't tried it yet, but I want to do the same thing.

I tried to do this with MC..and was not successful. Not saying it can't be done, but I did not get it done. It is possible to do this cause I have seen a video where they were using Cubase I think and sent each drum to a different track...

If you succeed in MC let me know what you did....that's never been an issue for me so I have not explored the details.

I'm going to try it now. But if you look at the video, when he selects the kit, there is a little green down arrow. That is where he selects the multiple outputs. So, I think it should work.

Well, it has been a while since I've used Jamstix. I went to your site Herb and I didn't have any luck.

I have a midi file that I got from Band in a Box, but I want to replace it with Jamstix. I inserted Jamstix as a soft synth. I then changed the output of the midi track to Jamsitx. Is this right or should it be the input? I can open Jamstix, select the style, drummer etc. but when I play I get no sound. Will Jamstix go to the midi track? Or the new track that I inserted? This is a good chance to use the chat at Mowtown? Any JS takers?

    Thanks.

Never mind. It was working. I just had to play it from the MC midi track.

I wasn't successful in loading separate tracks. I've posted it on the Jamstix forum, so I'll let you know if I get it.

    Herb/Annette,

I found the small green drop down arrow in the page where you select the kit - it asks you what kind of outputs you want, how many etc, but I still don't know for eg, if I need to insert 4 tracks into MC4 before doing this, or whatever (if I want 4 outputs)

I think you do Rob. I was just reading about it on the Jamstix forum. Also I read this:

"We have had several users wondering why their multiple output kit is all routed to #1 only. If that happens to you, look at the mixer and UNcheck 'Downmix'. Downmix can be very useful when using a host that doesn't support multiple outputs (or not easily). It is also useful when one needs separate EQ/comp settings but not multiple outputs in the host."

    Going to try this next.

If you want JS to output on separate tracks so you can add effects to the different drums, all you have to do is to add 7 more audio tracks for a total of 8 including the one made when JS was opened in the synth rack.

Now set each tracks input to a different output on JS, this is done by clicking the drop down menu in the tracks view inpit slot. you should see what ever JS has set as output, like Jamstix2 1 primary out, and Jamstix2 out 2, etc .

Then make sure the output of each track is the sound card.

Next add a reverb to the aux 1 and a compressor to aux 2 and add sends to each of the JS audio tracks and dial in the volume compression and reverb to taste and all is good in musicville.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Thanks Robo I'll try that. Do you think you could just explain the 'aux' and 'sends' thing a little bit more? I've heard of sends but don't know how or why to use them.

    Sorry to be a pain

Can I give it a try? Looks like the other Rob went home.
Let's say you have 6 tracks you want reverb on, but not the same level of reverb. You may want a lot on the BGV and just a touch on the lead vox.
Insert sends in the 6 tracks. The sends allow you to insert 1 reverb in the bus, and adjust how much signal you 'send' to the bus to be effected.

Oh man, I'm LOST beyond inserting 8 audio tracks.

    Sorry.

    Annette

Also, can this be done to an existing project or do you have to do this first? For example, I have a midi track from Band in a Box and I want to change it to Jamstix.

RE: Multiple outputs for JS2 2008/09/07 12:48:50 (permalink)
Ok! Here we go. I will post this in a step by step format.
Note: You my have to close Jamstix and re-open for all to sync up

    Step 1
Open a new project in DAW, use normal, blank or what ever. Using blank maybe less confusing for this step by step. Once you get it to work it will make more since when you want to set it up in other projects.

    Step 2
Insert a synth and pick Jamstix 2 as your synth.
A dialog box will open (Insert Soft Snyth Options) in the list of create these tracks section put a check mark in these boxes (Midi Source, Synth Track Folder, All Synth Audio Outputs Stereo)
Also make sure the synth property page has a check mark in it as well.
    Press OK

    Step 3
After pressing OK in step 2 the DAW should have created 8 audio tracks and 1 midi track for a total of nine tracks. If it did not, don't worry we will get to that.
Ok Jamstix should be open as well showing the quick start page. Just to keep this simple we are going to select one of the quick start options (pick the one labeled Jam Session Rock) and press the load button.
Now the main edit or song window of Jamstix should be on the screen.
You should be able to see that it has loaded Charlie as the drummer and custom rock as the style.
Also make sure that Jamstix is set to (JAM-NO INPUT)
You should now be able to press play to make sure you have sound coming from Jamstix.
I pressed play and nothing happened, no sound? Ok go to global and make sure you un-check stop at project end and press play again to see if it has sound now.

    Step 4
We should now have sound from Jamstix. What! It still is only showing output on track 1
    Lets fix that
In Jamstix click on the text labeled kit.
You should now have the kit screen showing for Jamstix
Across the top are the labels ( LOAD- SAVE- INSTALL PACK- (DOWN ARROW)- CACHE- LOW MEM)
    Click on the down arrow
This will display 5 different output settings. We are going to use Set output routing 8 for this work thru.
After you have selected Output Routing 8 try pressing play again.
If all went well you should now have movement on all 8 tracks.
Solo each track and label them kick, Snare, hi-hat and so on.
Have fun and hope this helps

    Thanks Robo,

I made it to step 2, so I am improving. I only get 5 tracks, but I can't find "Synth Track Folder" anywhere. Everything else is fine.

I hope I'm not frustrating you too much. I am trying.

EDIT: Oops nevermind. Just read step 3 to not worry about it. I guess I should read it all before I try it. I learned that in school I think many moons ago.

Okay here is the bottom line after a bit of experimenting.

Let's say you have JS setup with a drum track in it, or following a midi, audio or what ever jam. So it plays.

Then go to the kit window and set JS with the green drop down arrow to output to 8.

Now take a look at the audio track in the synth rack setup. It should say "Jamstix2 1 primary out" or something similar in the "I" or input box.

Then just right click in the gray blank track area below any existing tracks and add 7 new audio tracks.

In each track under "I" for input, set each one to a separate input off JS there will be 2 thru 8 then it will play eanch of the 8 outputs on a separate track, effects, volume, and panning can be adjusted for all of them individually.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

I was looking for it in Jamstix...so that would explain the problem! I also thought the play button was in Jamstix instead of MC 4. I guess I just don't have the natural instincts for this, but I still love writing music and I will get one song out using MC 4 if it kills me (hopefully it won't harm anyone here that has been so kind in walking me throught this stuff). I'm really good at writing regulations and legislation though. Honestly. You would think I would be able to wrap my head around this stuff. Maybe I over anyalize??????

Oh well, I'll keep on pluggin and strummin'. Thanks again everyone for your help.

The only reason I posted the step by step is I have had better luck with the software setting this all up doing the routing and all automatic instead of setting the whole thing manualy. If this was confusing to some of you, sorry, I thought this might help. It really is easy to do once you have done it a couple of times. Once I had everything the way I wanted it and knew I was setting it up the right way I saved it as a template so one click and I am ready to go.

Your step-by-step was nicely done, Thatsastrat.
I downloaded the demo this morning, and had been playing with it for a while when I saw your post.
I tend to agree that if you know you are going to use multiple outputs, bring them in right from the start. It's a lot easier.
Your post is well written, and I have considered illustrating it with screen shots, if it's alright.
It's a fair amount of work, but if the consensus is that it would be beneficial, I'll do it.

I'm not sure you want me to answer that! I'm going to try it again tonight and see if I can wrap my head around it with Thatsastrat and Robo's instructions. I was getting confused I think by looking in JS what was actually in MC. Just shows my inexperience. Were you able to get into Motown? We could meet up in chat maybe if I get stuck. It would save you a lot of work for nothing.

    Thanks.

Yes I got in, Annette. I had to use my Firefox connection. It didn't seem to agree with AOL. (actually, I'm starting to not agree with AOL, but I've got too much stuff tied to it)
We have two ayes, and plenty of lurkers on this thread, so I think it will be worthwhile.
fwiw, I like to test software to see how intuitive it is, before I have to consult the manual. I was very close on this one.
It makes sense to a degree, if you are familiar with the territory, but it is not the most straightforward interface.
I'll work on the pix, might be a day or two.

Okay, I'm in. I just didn't want to be the only one!! I take up enough of everyones time now as it is. I don't want to take take advantage of everyones kindness. I'm a little slower grasping some of this stuff.

Thanks for doing this Bob. I'll still play around with it in the meantime so I can at least be more conversant hopefully.
