Multiple repeats of a one measure MIDI drum machine pattern

I did this exercise years ago using a MIDI drum pattern from EZDrummer using SONAR 8.5.  First, I would choose a one measure beat and paste it into a SONAR MIDI track.  Then I would right-click on the single measure pattern and change the Clip Properties tab, 'Audio Stretching", to enable looping.

I then would highlight that pattern, copy it, and paste it multiple times to a new MIDI track.  I recall the trick to having the downbeat sound correct as the patterns aligned was having the Snap Properties set correctly.  There are various options for Absolute Time and Musical Time, etc...  I'm not sure what the correct settings should be.

I am now trying to do the same exercise with a one measure 4/4 beat produced from a BOSS DR-670 drum machine (I'm just that hip!).  I have the MIDI pattern recorded in SONAR 8.5.  I have enabled looping on that clip.  But I'm not sure how to copy that clip 8 times into a new track correctly to have it keep the downbeat aligning correctly.  Does the tempo in the drum machine have to match SONAR's?  What else am I doing wrong?

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this.  I'm sure this is a very basic exercise everyone knows the answer to (except me).

Thanks.

Snap setting set to Snap By, and Measures. Shoudn't matter the tempo if it's a midi clip.

When you want patterns from your drum machine. Set the machine to midi sync first.
Set a midi track to record and start. the drum machine should play the pattern in sync with Sonars tempo.
Make sure you go to preferences/ project/ midi and clock to set sonar to send clock output.
I do this all the time with my trusty old 505.

Use "groove clip looping"  to drag a clip out.

But what I do is record about 150 bars of each pattern and save those as templates.

I think turning on "groove clip looping" was the trick I had forgotten.  I just tried it and it worked.  Ironically, it was minutes before I read these replies.

I just made the tempo in SONAR the same as the DR-670.  I can play around with midi sync now that I've got it working.  Maybe snap properties doesn't matter?  I set it to Musical Time - "8th notes" and it worked.

In the old days I just recorded my DR-550 to a Tascam via analog outputs.  Never did the MIDI drum machine exercise before now.

    Thanks for your help!

My Yamaha MD 8 had midi sync so I learned that trick in the 90's.
Ya, you could just set both tempos the same and then quantize to clean it up.
