When you say Windows changes settings when you upgrade, are you speaking about "Windows Updates" too?

Windows update won't change user defined settings unless it's a buggy fix. I haven't seen that in win 7 or 8. Updating to a new version of windows can sometimes clear some settings to their default, often by design.

I always strongly recommend running windows update. I also recommend a good backup strategy.
