Muscle Shoals - The Documentary

Watched it last night.

Interesting back stories. Beautiful photography. Some icons weighed in (Jagger, Richards {Keef and Cliff}, Alicia Keys, Clarence Carter and of course some of The Swampers)

Rick Hall is little long in the tooth about his life. IMO they could have cut 10 minutes of his talking and still told his story.

All in all a pretty good watch.

I will look for it, it sounds interesting. Is Duane in it?

    Hi,

Hmmm ... I thought the Tom Dowd one was way better than this ... but you guys don't like the Allman Brothers, anyway!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

    Hi,

    Naaah...

Too many Top Ten songs, with all the right 'notes' being played, not enough 18 minute cacophanous warblings and explorations of self-indulgent bombed-out mediocrity passed off as 'improvisation' during which the sound engineer repeatedly poked himself in the eye with a 2H pencil just to get some relief.

They recently released this documentary on BluRay and DVD. I was purchasing some other items on Amazon and unexpectedly came across this, so I bought the BR version. A good movie. Admittedly, I knew very little about Muscle Shoals. It is a small town in Alabama, not a recording studio per se. The actual studio that started it all is FAME Recording Studios. And subsequently the hit songs produced from the region became known by many as the "Muscle Shoals Sound".

Sound City, CA had a ton of famous acts recorded there. We find similar events coming from Muscle Shoals, AL. I had heard Lynyrd Skynyrd did record there. But did not know that Percy Sledge "When A Man Loves A Woman" was recorded there. Nor knew that Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett, Rolling Stones, and many more also recorded there.

LA had the "Wrecking Crew". Here in the south they had the "Swampers". For the Lynyrd Skynyrd fans, tribute is mentioned in the song "Sweet Home Alabama".

Hopefully it will be available to stream from one of the internet services. It is worthwhile viewing for anyone interested in a bit of pop music history from the 60's and 70's.

Great Documentary. Great that a lot of unsung musical heroes are finally getting some recognition. We need more films like this and The Wrecking Crew and Standing In The Shadows Of Motown
