Mushy Peas

It's cold and dark at Strammy Towers and the wind is terrible...

The weather's not too good either.

Now, after his long day badger-tickling and fox-wolfing down in the lower fields, I've given Jeeves the evening off to visit his dear old mother in the local asylum (to whence I had her certified last year for stealing an ant from the top field).

Anywho, all this means that I'm cooking for myself this evening.

Sadly the rain has turned the croquette lawn into a quagmire so instead of eating Al Capone I'll be taking tea in the studio.

Obviously I haven't got a clue how to cook the stuff Jeeves comes up with so I've settled on fish fingers, mashed potato and mushy peas.

Which leads me to the question - when you have mushy peas, how do you 'source' them:
  1. From a can
  2. Frozen variety
  3. Make 'em yourself
My dear Grandma used to make her own and they were delicious, although a little time consuming to make.

Any input would be gratefully received.

I think mushy peas come fresh from a frozen can. They can be composed into mush once you thaw the can, and then run them over with a toy train driven by an engineer who moonlights as a musician.

That how my nana used to do it I think.

I have the solution Steve.

Get some spuds boiling for the mash
Put the oven on and get the fish fingers a-cookin'
Leg it to the chip shop (you only got 20 mins, so don't stop in The Bombardier's Palace for the quick one), order pie, chips and mushy peas.
Leg it home, sharpish
Lightly toss the pie & chips into next doors garden
Serve with a garnish of thick-sliced white bread

Mmm!

My upper-class acquaintances refer to it as the 'crepper' or the 'shet-hice'

The perfect recipe Ian!

I'd take it one step further though - I'll throw the frozen fish fingers and the unpeeled spuds at next door's cats, make certain I spend a few hours in the pub, then order the meal from the chippy

I'll bet a can of Batchelors is another thing you miss out there?

Beag, these are peas which are.... er.. um.......... mushy

Normally ordered as a side dish with cod & chips from the local chippy or as a perfect accompaniment to faggots and mash, a real delicacy:

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO PEAS?????  I love peas!  I love Green Beans!  I love Broccoli!  But, Oh!  I can't stand them if they're overcooked!  I can't even eat vegetables at my mother-in-law's house.... She cooks everything all day (She's a sweet and lovely Mississippi lady, but golly, I can only eat tender-crisp)!  I have to raid the fridge at night for some raw carrots...... or have my husband take us to Soup Plantation/Sweet Tomatoes for a veggie fix....

I'm gathering it's how the Brits roll.
I may have to reconsider my trip to the UK next year if it gets any uglier than mushy pees with faggots and 'Spotted Dick'.

But there is a compulsory visit to the local 'chiperie' when you come.  You've never lived until you've sampled sitting in a rain shelter with a plastic mac on overlooking the sea during one of the most miserable of days sampling the local caught fish, c/w with chips, mushy peas and a whalley.

It is what the British summer was designed for.

I know just the eaterie for proper faggots and spotted dick too.

And a compulsory visit to the balti belt is in order

When I was pretending to be a student at Brum Uni, I fancy I must have become aquainted with every curry house in Selly Oak

And some of those I recall visiting back then are still going strong today.

Oh, and a decent donner kebab must be in order too....

Will I be able to carry those on or will I need to check them in at the Airport?

BTW, if I have to eat the foodstuffs you guys have outlined here I'll go home 14 stone lighter. I'm certain I would not be able to keep any of that stuff down. I am not an adventurous eater nor do I even experiment with foods.
