Music Creator 4

I have installed this on a WinBook Laptop with 1500 mgz , 1.2 meg of ram and 30 gig hard drive space still available. Trying to record and play back live music through a PV14 mixer and USB connection. Problem is Laptop records through speakers and not the mixer. When I change the laptop to record through line and USB connection then it won't play back through Mixer. I am trying to do a digital recording. Is that what I want? How should the input and output devices be set in the software as well as the computer. I have read and tried the tutorials but can't get the thing to record our bands music and then play it back.

    I'm not quite following you.
Can you give us an end-to-end description of your signal path?
I'm not familiar with that mixer. Does it function as a sound card through the USB connection?

What do you mean by end to end description of signal path? I have a band using 9 channels through a mixer and amp for a sound system for live performances. What I want to do is record the performance then play it back at breaks. I do not think the mixer functions as a sound card but I am not familiar enough with sound and music recordings to know. I am not getting the input from the mixer to the laptop connected correctly or the output from the laptop back to the mixer connected properly to play the recording back through the sound systems speakers.

I'm trying to get a picture of how you have your hardware physically connected to each other. You mentioned line in and USB, so I am trying to figure out how the signal is traveling from your mixer, to the computer, and back out.
Once we know how you have everything hooked up, we will have a better idea of how to set your software.

    OK,
I've just downloaded the manual for that. Interesting setup. There is no mention of installing drivers, so I have to make some assumptions here.
Don't start MC4 yet. Plug in the USB connection. Has Windows found the new device and given you the message that is ready to use?
Since this device has no specific drivers, it will be using generic USB audio drivers.
btw, what version of Windows are you using?
Open your Windows Volume Control. Do you see the USB listed as an Input(in the Recording control) or Output(in Playback)?
Now start MC4. Click Options>Audio>Drivers. You will probably see something like USB Audio Device, with possible variations(L,R,Stereo) in both Input and Output Drivers. You should also see your sound card listed. For now, put checkmarks in all the boxes. This makes everything available for the program to use. Click OK.
Let me know if this is making sense so far. This is a total SWAG, and I can't see what you see. Screen shots would be a plus if you can do that.
If we are good so far, we can tryto move forward.

When I plug in the USB to the mixer the computer has no reaction....gives no sound or does not give the message that new hardware has been recognized. I am using Windows XP Professional. In Windows volume control I do not see USB listed.

Windows may have done the new hardware thing when you first plugged it in, so that in itself may not be a problem.
Go ahead and start MC4. What do you see in Options>Audio>Drivers?

When I open MC4 and go to Options>Audio> Drivers I see the driver for my computer Realtek AC97 Audio, and USB audio device under both input and output. I have checked all the boxes. However, I am then directed to close MC4 and restart. When I do this the settings return to the original. Which is my sound card.

The default Driver Mode for MC4 is WDM, which may not be compatible with one or more of your devices. This might be the hitch.
Go to Options>Audio>Advanced and change the Driver Mode from WDM to MME. This does require a restart, so don't make the I/O selections yet.
Close and restart the program. It will run Wave Profiler. This identifies audio devices for the program, so let it run.
After it is finished, go back to Options>Audio>Drivers, and make your I/O selections. Does it let you keep them?

    Hi, coach,
    try this:

Thank you for contacting Cakewalk Technical Support. Please try the
attached reset utility. If that alone fails, please go to your Windows
Start Menu and click "Run". At the prompt,
    type or paste the following:

    %APPDATA%/CAKEWALK

This will open a folder in Windows Explorer. Find the folder named
"Music Creator 4". Right-click on it and choose "rename". Change
the folder's name to the following:

    "Music Creator 4 backup"

Launch Music Creator 4 again and allow it to recopy the application
    data.

Before you launch MC4. Please download this driver mode utility.
http://www.cakewalk.com/support/sonar/drivermode.zip You can use it to
launch SONAR in a different driver mode such as MME.

I have downloaded the drivermode you suggested and followed the steps. I still have no sound playing back through the sound system. I did not try to record because I was able to do a digital recording and that is what I am trying to play back through the sound system. Do I need to make changes to the computer audio devices?

yes, the steps I provided there are so you can make the change to MME driver mode and it should stick. once you do that, see if you can play something.

Alright! I've got sound! I changed the settings on the computer to USB after I downloaded the driver mode and now I get it to play back through the mixer. I will be doing some live recordings tonight and we will see how things go. Thanks for the help! I will let you know if I have any more issues. Thanks a thousand times over!

I am trying to burn a CD directly from MC4 I go to burn audio CD and add my songs then click burn. Problem is the first song will burn then as they progress down the list the songs become distorted with skips and large open spots. I have tried cleaning the CD burner. Do the digital files need to be exported to another format? I thought they were saved as .wav files. Any suggestions.

I have never used the m/c 4 burner, I've always exported and burned through a different program, but, if the first song is coming out good, then there really isn't anything the you might be doing wrong, or so it seems. I know when I use the external program, the burn speed can make a difference, so if m/c 4 gives you the option, try the slowest burn speed you can, and there is always a possibility that even a new cd can have a bad sector on it. Are you using cd-r's, not cd-rw's, cd-rw will not play on most cd players.
    I'm officially out of ideas...next...

    Only reinforcement.
Burning CD's and DVD's is an extremely intensive process for the CPU. The fewer programs running, the better, and I use the proprietary software that came with the burner.
Make sure you export your wav files at 44.1k/16bit. And never use CD-RW's, if you intend to play it on anything but the computer.
