Music Creator 5 Sound Center Problem
I have MC5. Windows XP SP3. Plenty of RAM, etc. Just got USB Midiman Keystation 49 controller. Plugged it in, and in Sound center all I got was the same "generic" synth sound, no matter what instrument I chose. Now when I open MC5, even without the controller plugged in, Sound Center emits that same synth sound for all instrumnents I choose. HELP!! I contacted Cakewalk, but no reply Thanks

we'll need a little more info - remember we can't see what you're doing. when you get the same "generic" synth sound from sound center no matter what instrument you choose - how are you inserting soundcenter? what optinos are you choosing from the popup window? the next part is puzzling - when you open MC5 without the controller plugged in - how does soundcenter emit a synth sound? are you trying to play a MIDI track with MIDI data on it? or are you pressing keys on the keyboard of soundcenter? how are you choosing the instruments in soundcenter? are you acutally loading them or are you just choosing them on the menu?

Are there tutorials included with MC5? They might be very helpfull. What did the MC5 Help say about MIDI and soft synths? Are you in any way familiar to using soft synths and MIDI? It seems to me you'd need to read the manual-files before contacting Cakewalk. If only MC5 includes such. I have never used it. (I know. I can never be as diplomatic as Beagle)

I am choosing instruments from the Sound Center menu, then using the keyboard below menu to hear the instrument selected . As far as "loading" the instruments, what do you mean? The help guide didn't mention that. I initiate a new track, choose Cakewalk sound center as input, then double click icon to open sound center menu. thanks

ok - but once you navigate thru the instrument lists and find one you like, you have to double click on it in order to load it into soundenter. are you doing that?

No I haven't got that far yet. I'm still concerned about the fact that I can't preview various instruments (the "generic" synth sound for every instrument), and I won't be able to record that instrument. I should tell you that when I first got it, I WAS able to preview all the Sound Center instruments using the SC keyboard. It was only after I purchased the keyboard controller that I'm having this problem Thanks alot for your time and patience!!!

until you load an instrument you can not hear a thing.... there is no preview function. You load an instrument and play it... if you don't like it you choose another and play it and so on. I don't pay attention to the whole loading process anymore.... I think there is a default sound that loads. but I never hit a key until I'm loaded with the sample I want to use....

no, if you don't load the instrument you can't "preview" it. that's why you can't hear the instrument you're trying to "select" I'm not sure why you were able to do this before the keyboard - that would be a mystery because it's not SUPPOSED to work that way.

and I won't be able to record that instrument. And just for all the new folks's information, you don't actually 'record' a soft synth; you record the MIDI data which tells the soft synth what note to play, when to play it and how long to play it, and how loud to play it. The sound you hear is not recorded. Or you can just play through the soft synth without recording it.

just to make sure I wasn't smoking becan or something, I loaded soundcenter and verified. yes, it does have a default sound loaded when you first load it. you can always return to the default sound by going to SYNTHS>SYNTH SEQUENCES>DEFAULT PROGRAM but just selecting a sound does not make it able to be auditioned. you have to load it to be auditioned. there's a small little 1/8th note icon uner the rapture/dimension icon that allows you to audition the sound without using the keyboard or a controller and it plays a small sequence (much like TTS-1's audition buttons work, but you have to have a sound loaded by double clicking on the sound name first.
