Looks like Robo was there.... I did not see any other posts. Robo....good job. Even though no one else was in....I'm sure you had fun.... (consider it practicing your Kata) Here's an idea. Sunday nights and probably most other times for a general call to arms....might not work well for me and others. Would you be open to an open format "war"? People who wish to join the fray, take a total of 90 minutes to record and mix their song....at their convenience. (Scouts honor!) Then post it when the war starts. This would allow more to enjoy the battle and the thrill of the 90 minute deadline, since they could record it at any time they wish, and that is convienent for them. This would allow for others to join in and recording & mixing would not necessiirilly have to be consecutive....just 90 minutes total time....not a minute more!

That could be a good game as well. It takes away from the idea of all working at the same time, but hey schedules are hard. So let's hear some suggestions.

Ironic that I should be answering this because I didn't understand what "covers" were either a couple of years ago. When you "cover" a song is when you play someone else's song. Doing a cover would be playing/recording "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" (Boy George - Culture Club ). So Robo's contest was creating recordings of other people's songs and picking the best one created within his hour time limit. Rob - I, too, am constrained by schedule and like Herb's idea. That is, if I get time to do it at all anyway.

That is a fantastic idea. I could have a lot of fun with that. I'm hoping that the "cover" version does not have to replicate the original.

That's the beauty of a cover, some try to duplicate the original, some, you can't even tell what the original sounded like. Later Albert

I'm not sure if this is a positive or a negative, but spreading out your 90 minutes might take away from some of the adrenaline created by having to produce it in 90 minutes? With the time pressures, you have to make quick(er) decisions on how you are going to do the cover. I thought that's what made part of the "game"/competition fun? Just a thought. Nutty

I donno bout youss guyz (that's yankee talk) but at times...especially on weekends, I don't have 90 minutes (very often) to sit down and work on a tune..... My thought was to record a cover....anytime I have the time.....20 minutes here 30 there....max out at 90 total....then post it to the other forum site when finished.... Have 2 threads set up.....one thread set up for the specific contest....no jabber jawing...just post the link to the song. Have another thread for chewing the rag about the tunes. set a deadline...when all songs have to be posted. Then judge by what ever criteria and everybody votes. Announce the winner. I was a member of another forum community some time back that did something like that on a monthly basis. (((It was all original songs but I like this format..."cover tunes" as well....I'd like to see originals in the mix too....but the rule is you have to record a previously unrecorded, unposted song...no pulling out old sound click songs. I'd also like to see..."best effort" contests....in other words...no recording time limits...do the best you can do and post it.))) All songs were submitted by a date & time....people listened & voted...... the results were posted and the winner announced a day later.

I could use the extra time too, but I didn't know if that would take away from the hype of the game. Plus it gives you lots of time to deal with those after thoughts. I guess if everyone is following the same rules, it wouldn't be a problem. I'd love to "play", but mine would all be Johnny Cash style, plain and simple..guitar and a vocal, maybe bass to start out with. But I think it would be an awesome opportunity to grow. Especially if people post what they did to arrive at their version. Who decides the song and when? For example, do we have enough time before hand to find chords/tabs for the songs? Listen to it once or twice if we are not 100% sure of how the song goes? Nutty

Lets do this, we each have two weeks to create a Cover tune the time line will be like this: we each get 90 minutes to record the song, and 45 minutes to mix and master, then 30 minutes to upload the tune to a site. Then sunday night two weeks from now between 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Pacific standard time you post that song in a thread on Music town. I will setup the thread it will be called something like "music games" and there will be a new thread under lounge where we talk about it. In the mean time I will do the game setup and post the complete rules for that game. Then each time we play we will incorporate more of these suggestions, maybe the next time it will be a new original tune, following that maybe a contest where we do a three track accoustic song, then a duo contest, maybe an allstar band contest where two or three band of three or more battle it out for top honors. We might do a contest where we do a song and each exchange individual tracks, and do a remix. There is no end to the possibilities.

Sounds like fun. It's a good idea to give it time. THis way we can visualize , or should i say, audio-lize our cover in our head for a few days, humming and toying with it before we even touch a keyboard. Then we only have 90 minutes to cement it.
