Music notes

A guy at work wants me to 'do' a song for him, for his girlfriend's birthday.
Not just a guy, I should mention, but a Zone Manager.
Would it be dangerous and potentially damaging to my tenure at Wal*Mart to say no?
Well, I already said yes. He says he wants to sing it, in Spanish, but I would have to do everything else, since he doesn't play.
Should be interesting, and given how slowly I work, I have plenty of time (mid-December).

On another note, my brother Mike keeps digging up these old cassettes of him and his bands and wanting me to CD them. This latest one has 6 cover songs from the Big Hair era.
Frankly, I'm a little bit amazed at what they did with just 2 guys, a 4-track and a drum machine. Way beyond the simple stuff he and I recorded back then.

Oh, turns out that Mike is a left-handed drummer, so I won't be using his kit very often.
But he's lovin' it!

Well, at least he gave you plenty of time!  :-)  It should be a fun challenge.  Hopefully!

Left-handed drummer, huh?  Bummer.  Unless you learn to play that way too. :-)

OK...first question... how much is he willing to pay you to "do a song for him"?

Has he given you a song melody or anything or is he expecting you to do all the work of writing something original for him to give to his  GF?

    done.

    To a latin beat.
He's American of Hispanic lineage, and an Army veteran.
Herb, the fee will be me learning new things, hopefully. He says he can sing the song, but doesn't play any instruments, so he's going to email me his singing and I'll try to cobble something together.
    A challenge.

It will be interesting to hear what you come up with.

My son did that once for a song my ex-wife wrote. She sang the melody and he arranged the entire song behind it (with a few helpful hints by his Pops).

I used to work that way with Tim in Acrobat's Supper. It was certainly a challenge, but also fascinating having someone sing acapella, then working out the chord changes behind that. Very often some unexpected chords would suggest themselves, and cool stuff would happen.

One has to wonder why that would matter.

So long as it rhymes at least twice in every line stays below a 6th grade diction and avoids any mention of workers rights, your job should be secure.

And since it will be in Spanish, I can always claim I didn't know he was calling for a boycott of Wal*Mart.

Be careful with setting expectations about future music projects.

This person may come to expect that your time & studio are at their beck-and-call for future projects (for free).

Find a tactful way to express that you are actually doing them a HUGE (and one-time) favor here.

    Best,
