My 2 biggest problems with sonar X3, PLEASE HELP!
Hello all since noone bothered to look at my previous 2 post about this important issue (specially from cake people) , here goes round 2... short version this time.. NR 1: Click to isolate (clip promote) when you click lower portion of a midi / audio clip in take lanes, it solos that clip and mutes the rest and this happens frequently when I accidentaly click on a lower part of clips and then Im lost with which clips I had manually muted.. gaaah! ( I know I can swith to move tool for temporarly disable "clip isolate" but then I wont have all smart tools under move tool mode) I can't find words how much I dislike this feature (bug!), or that its a default forced behavior in X3!! PLEASE tell me there is an option for disable'ing this NR 2: Mouse selection consistency can we bring back the standard left mouse drag selection mode in sonar? its clashing with melodyne everytime Im jumping to melodyne editor (docked) and sonar sonar = right mouse melodyne = left mouse (and pretty much every standard software) but most important feature I guess is to let the user define what is a smart tool and not, dont force a new feature, let the user decide if its a smart tool or a workflow braker, If I dont like it then let me disable it in the settings menu... more detailed posts: NR 1: sonar x3 producer mouse click on midi/audio clip promote bug?? : NR 2: mouse selection consistency problem (sonar X3b): sorry if this got a little harsh post but if this wasnt important to me , I would not bother writing this... /o - - - - - - - - my music : soundcloud / orhanproject

When you come off like this, it makes people hesitate to help or even pay attention to your actual problem. If you have a feature request, submit it. If you have a genuine bug, report it. It's nice that some of the cakewalk guys occasionally chime in, but this is mostly a user forum. The problem with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rant is obviously , no product is perfect. What you think of as the perfect workflow is not so pefect to the next person. I do agree that when possible, there should be a way to give users an option, but I also know that sometimes that is not desirable or possible. Things change and they are slowly embraced or discarded. This is a fairly helpful forum, but the tantrum bit usually gets very little result.

to use the take lanes in x3 i suggest you look at the video by cakewalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPi1BkBhEvE&feature=youtu.be I have completed three projects..one with 20 piano takes, one with 14 vocal takes and 12 guitar takes and one with 9 vocal takes...and not once have i manually muted a take lane... I follow the process exactly as shown in the video..record your takes into lanes, split into manageable regions, audition them and promote to the comp track by hitting enter.

Hey Mystic38 thanks for the video link, watched it now comping on take lanes is cool and good for what it does but that doesnt mean I want it on always, but rather switch to this mode when I need to... because as it is now, its always on by default for midi/audio clips and that is my problem, specially when navigating thru my project with many midi tracks and many take lanes and clicking to navigate my pleayhead etc.. I guess this forces me to use less take lanes OR no take lanes at all....

Not sure I fully understand this, unless you mean "Lasso"...? Dragging in the top of a clip with left mouse button selects, though admittedly the vertical zone where you get the Select tool is microscopic when a lane is collapsed. That could use improvement.

To turn off Comping, right click the record button then pick something other than comping. It's fairly easy to turn off and on.

nope, changing record / comp modes do not change the behavior of "click on lower portion of a midi/audio clip to solo & mute rest take lanes" :(

This is from the online help: To hide clip headers and maximize clip waveform display To globally hide the clip headers, click the Track view View menu, point to Display, and select Maximize Waveform Height. When this options is enabled, the waveform display spans the full height of clips. Does that help?

youll get used to it. :-) you can post your opinions I think that's a good idea but right click lasso is on its second version. you will get used to it and enjoy it because it free's up the left button for other things. like clip selection. its going to take a lot of people for cakewalk to say..okay folks, weve decided after 2 versions of returning lasso to the left button. I don't see it. not many other are complaining about it, so I just don't see it buddy :-) my advise is learn as many keyboard shortcuts as possible and give it a fair chance. it takes some warming up too. I wasn't keen on this either at first, I was like "WTH is is this" but now I cant imagine it any other way. cakewalk is trying to emulate the default procedures for all daws because it makes users commingfrom other daws learn that much quicker. yes left click lasso is done the same way on other daws as well. best wishes man.

I went through the same thing on a mondo scale when going from 8.5 to X1. All the changes were quite disorienting. But once I learned the changes, I found that X1 gave me a much smoother workflow than 8.5 and it was well worth the acclimation time.

I too was disoriented about the lasso having been switched to the right mouse click. After I figured out how that it worked it took about 1 second to adopt it. I like that the left click is for selection and the right click is for lasso. That's a pretty efficient combination.

Ha ha! i regularly switch between 2 computers running Sonar X3c One has the mouse set up for a right handed person, the other one for a leftie!! You don't appreciate the meaning of confusion until you've tried this (I've been meaning to switch one of them round, but I can't decide which one )

nargile, though I'll be in the minority with you on this, I hate right click lasso. I wish we had a choice to choose which we like better...even if it shut down some sort of functionality for left click. Some of the new Sonar ways just don't help me in my particular work-flow. This right click thing....I just can't get used to it. I screwed up a track last night in front of a client and cursed really loud. Of course ctrl z fixes it, but I just hate making mistakes in front of people. It may be intuitive to the majority, but like you, I hate right click lasso and hated it in X2. -Danny

Yeah, you'll get used to the mouse changes. Years ago we lived on a boat. The 360 degree view is great but a huge trade off of boat life is less stuff and less room for the stuff you have. I had a pc and the only place I could put it and the big ol crt left me using my left hand for the mouse! Being hugely left hand challenged, I was certain I'd never adapt to clicking, dragging and splitting things in Sonar. And just the thought of delicate operations like automation nodes done with the wrong hand had me wishing I was a switch hitter. Well, after a few months, mousing from the left was second nature. And believe it or not when we sold the old home on the water it was awkward clicking with my right hand again.. Seriously! So I strongly second the others that have said, "you'll get used to it".

Anyone who doesn't like the right-click lasso has mainly long clips with much blank space in the Clips pane. My Clips pane is full of short clips. Right-click lasso is a godsend.
