Sure, there was some expansion going on. Who Am I to judge? The universe would sometimes block my view of the TV and ask, "Does this Reality make me look fat?" I'd say that there was just more universe to for everyone to love.
It was inevitable, I suppose. Someone convinced the universe to go on a diet. You know how it is. You lose a few star systems, your dimensions shrink, you buy a few new clothes, but not a lot because you'll probably go down a couple of sizes before you get a chance to wear them... In the meantime, some places that were stretched like a drum head are now a bit "looser". Gravity stops by and plays a couple of practical jokes. The next thing you know, the universe is blocking my view of the TV, pulling at the fabric of time and space and asking, "Does this make me look wrinkled?"
"Of course not!" I answer. "By the way, we're out of raisins."
